replacement master cylinder?

driving around in my 109 (ive replaced my bad axels and tranny with ones out of a donor), ive become even more painfully aware of home much the stock drum brakes on a 67 109 suck. ive been thinking that if i could replace my rover master cylinder with one from another brand with a bigger bore, it might be more driveable because i wouldnt have to pump the brakes 3 times to get pressure. Ive replaced all the hard and oft lines, and i dont see any leaks in them or at the MC, so im pretty sure that this is where my lack of pressure is coming from.

i was looking for anybodies thoughts on a potential donor for a master cylinder that would be farily compatable with my rover system (not looking to buy the booster system that comes from rovers north). This is a DD, no oversized tires of lift yet, so im just looking for a small improvement.

Goodday,

I'm from Malaysia, and in Malaysia we would just change the whole system to Toyata's. Much less hassle over the long run.

Just curious, which Toyota system do you use?

Adam I am replacing my complete ABS set-up components with the older set-up. Not sure if you could cap the extra lines and make it work??? But figured I would throw out the option. I am replacing the brake pedal tower, etc. Should be done in a two to three months. I am not in a huge hurry. Are you?

Your drums are out of adjustment. The MC is not the problem.

YMMV but this is the most common thing. If the drums are too far out or not matched with the shoes right you will never be able to get it right without replacing both.

i've already replaced both, and adjusted them more than a couple times. ive always heard to either adjust them right up to the drum, or to where they are draggin on the drum. ive tried both ways, and the braking still sucks. ive rebuilt the mc 3 times, im all out of things that i can think of. if somebody has any ideas other than these or replacing the mc, id be glad to hear em.

Yeah! here is your solution!

But a friggin' Toyota and quitcha bitching!!!

...but seriously...I'm guessing your master cylinder is having the same problem as my wife's series III had which caused me to destroy it when in a panic I did NOT remember to pump the brakes! An old Rover guru mentioned a faulty flowback? valve or similar wording which cause this phenominum! all you need to do really is ge a new master cylinder...preferably get a complete series brake master assy incl pedal and vacuum assist! it works great when working.

on my '58 and '66 88" 's I was able to lock up the brakes. the 109 brakes are stronger!

or you could simply replace with a Toyota or nissan M/C ...or horrors! even a Gm or Ford unit if you look around. there are many that fit and work great!

paul (all rover parts in my brakes, but that MAY change when I replace all the carnage from that accident and get teh bitch runnign again! than may do same with the '66)

I just had to rebuild my master cylinder on my 109. I live in Fairbanks AK, and the -57 killed the seal. I am now in the process of getting it put back in. I filled it on the bench, then capped it. I 'm hoping it dosen't get too much air. It has always bees weak. stopping is like working out on half a stair master.

you are using teh old CB brake master?

I wouldn't touch that one at all! I take them out and install a CV style...jut make SURE you get the correct 109 one, not the smaller 88 one...

the CB is notorious for trouble bleeding! you neeed to fill on the bench, buut also if i recall they suggest raising rear(or ws it front?)of teh rover by a large amount while bleeding! yes, heard from many old-timers it's teh only to sucessfully do so...or else the brakes will work...than not...than work..etc.

oh! and if you hae only driven land-rovers you think the brakes work great! ;-) it's teh guys who expect them to brake like a modern truck who are disappointed...remember they were not designed for SPEED!
...and yes, my left leg is stronger from braking rovers and similar for twenty years

Paul(somewhere in storage have a few cb masters gathering dust/oxidtion)
