Pinion Bearings

I friend developed noise in the front axle (1986 90) following an off road trip. We pulled it apart. The pinion had a ton of slop. The inner bearing's outer race has a rippled wear pattern in the main thrust area. It still has the stock 10 spline diff in there... Surprisingly good condition as he has a 200 hp V8. The oil looked OK other than containing bits of ground up bearing race. As far as we know the diff has been in there since day one...

Anyone seen a pinion bearing just eat itself for no apparent reason??
