CVs-GBR/Ashcroft
Shane posted some good data on CVs earlier, I'd like some feedback from others running uprated front CVs. I'm not going to deviate from the Rover axle just yet so I want to get the most strength and longevity out of what is available.
Sounds like Mike from ECR is having good success with the Ashcroft 1Ton CVs with 36s but they are spendy not to mention the additional mods like new spindles, ect. GBRs new stuff theoretically sounds stronger but is anyone running these either? I'm looking for feedback particularly from those running 35's or larger(I run a small 35 as Doug points out ). Type of terrain, frequency of wheeling, how long they've held up, driving style are all things l'd like to know before I plunk down any cash. Changing out stock units on a regular basis is my last resort, so any personal experience with other options is much appreciated!Johnathan |

well, I've been running the GBR HD CVs and axles for a while and I've had pretty good luck with them. The last set I broke was when I had trashed my rear ring and pinion and was trying to limp my D90 out of the Rubicon on Front wheel drive. At that point, with FWD and 35" tires, nothing will hold up forever. Bill is telling me that he's going to have the Sooooper duty stuff on line sometime, but I'm not exactly sure when that will be. Since I'm going to be trying to keep two trucks running, I may end up trying the ECR setup in one and the GBR setup in the other.
I just got a new set of Bill's latest and greatest using the standard CV, replacing the cage, and doing some other treatments to try to increase strength. I'll be putting these in pretty soon and at that point, we'll see how they stand up to my 37" tires. Recently, I've only been doing snow runs, so it hasn't been a problem, but when I get back to the rocks, we'll see what happens. -John

From my resent conversation with Bill it seems he has the soooperest CV's in stock. he is sending me one for me to look at.
I'm thinking that with a pressed on coller like the marfields or whatever they're called these could be as good as it gets for the stock rover housing/swivels. |

I have mcnamarra inner axles that I got used vs the GBR/maxidrive shafts that now come with the GBR extreme duty kit. Bill offered to trade me for the GBR shafts since he thinks they are stronger. I don't know the actual cost of the GBR inner haft shafts but the CV's by themselves are 499each. For eveything to work you need: inner axles with 23 spline CV end 23 spline CV's new drive flanges as the 23 spine CV's have a longer stub axle. collar/spacer for CV end of axle. pair of brass collars for end of axle before CV end.(haven't decided yet if these are actually necessary. Don't know the actual price for the whole kit as the prices have changed but seems like the following: 400 shafts 200 flanges 1000 cvs. and $5.95 for a tube of anal ease. |

Here is the scoop on the ECR vs GBR vs My setups:
ECR - *Stock 110 early 23 spline CV's (AEU 2242) *Aschroft 23/24 spline axles (which require no additional spacer on the axle shaft itself) *New front hubs/drive flanges (at considerable expense) GBR - *Stock 110 early 23 spline CV's with special "treating" *GBR HD cages *MaxiDrive Front 23/24 spline axles with bronze bushings that take the place of the stub axle roller bearing, and some bronze spacer ring *GBR Drive flanges (specific for the 110 CV's) My Setup - *Stock 110 early 23 spline CV's *GBR HD Cages *Ashcroft 23/24 spline axles *GBR Drive Flanges and brass bushing I chose to source my parts directly through the UK (except for the GBR parts), and used a middle man (cuz Ashcroft won't send stuff directly to you). This saved a bundle, and I got the whole shebang (including extra halfshafts, and 1 extra CV) for less than the complete GBR setup (and much less than the ECR "kit"). fyi the AEU 2242 (early 110 23 spline CV) that is around $500 from US sources, is about $200 directly from Ashcroft if you can find a middle man. Anyway, I think the ECR way is way to much to change in order to make it work (plus, you are getting stock CV's). My way or the GBR way is easier (except for the really tight fit of the GBR drive flanges). Bill Ritchie ps. I have been running this setup since the TO 2001 with good success so far (4.1's, Auto, Lockers, 35x14.5 SSRs, and some aggressive wheeling). |
