2=1 in 6 weeks?
As I look towards my garage and driveway I see a 1988 Range Rover and a 1964 SIIA each sitting respectively in their own places. In 6 weeks time, just prior to MAR, can both of these vehicles occupy one parking space? (A short amount of) Time will tell. Hedge your bets people, this is going to be a close one.

I'd think you could do it right quick with one of those nifty vertical parking space thingies.
![]() Of course, I have lots of room to talk as I've been trying to do the same thing for two years.

There's a similar one up on Ebay right now http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...e=STRK:MEWA:IT
Maybe doable but I think it would take more that just the weekends. |

It can be done. If you have the LRW rolling thunder series of articles that should help.
Are you shortening it to 88in or going 100in? Bulkhead modifications are a tempest in a tea pot. No biggy at all.

I just pulled a RRC body off this morning and snapped some pics. I agree you will still have to cut on the firewall. But with everything apart how hard can it be? Are you done yet.

i'm leaving it at 100", i'm going to cut the frame off just past the rear spring perches and fab a new rear crossmember and rear framerails out of tube most likely, to keep things simple. i will be making all the body outriggers from 2x3 .188 wall tubing that i have laying around, will also make sliders out of this most likely.

I could have that body mounted in 1/2 a day easy - done it a few times now.
Do you want a cut off list of the RHS to mount it this way. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showt...ght=body+mount If you leave the engine in the stock location it wont come anywhere near the firewall. The problem with this is that the motor will be sitting to far forward in the engine bay to fit a radiator in front of it. Even if you remote mount the rad the motor still wont fit behind the stock series grill. So if you run the motor in stock rangie location and remote mount the radiator you will have to move the grill and bonnet forward (and add some sheet to the back of the bonnet which I never did). If you move the motor back about 3inches and run thermo fans etc then you may just fit the radiator in front of the motor if you move the grill right to the front of the guards (like current defender style). If you move the motor way back (like about 12in) then you will be able to fit the radiator in front of it with the grill in stock location. In all these options you wont have to modify the fire wall at all although you will have to open up the transmission tunnel a bit no mater which way you do it. Sam

Heres a cool thought - the rig that I linked to above is still going very strong. It looks alot different now but most of it is still there except for the rear axle (now cruza 60 series instead of d44 and the body which is now all tube instead of series 2a) Heres a link to a vid taken of a comp hear a few weeks ago when Rod (current owner) rolled it.

Bush-- you need to post more detailed pics, that looks like some fairly novel thinking for the rear suspension!
also Sam-- do you have any measurements you could give me for reference points of where you mounted the firewall in relation to the chassis. I could gather a fairly good idea from the pics but something more precise to start from would be great. another thing, do you have any detailed pics of how you mounted the radiator when you were running the Rover V8? You should be able to work it out very closely from the pics. You can see the front outrigger, the removable crossmember and the firewall mount. I actually mounted the body totally centred about the wheelbase so in the end I had the same amont of tyre sticking out the front as what i had out the back.
When I ran that setup the radiator was mounted horizontlly underneith the bonnet but I wouldnt do this on a street driven rig. I think you really should move the motor back and mount the rad in front of the motor (like I did on the mogrover). Its fairly easy to move the motor back and it will make it a much better rig as well. Ill measure the 2x3in box lengths and then you just weld them on the chassis then you sit the body on top of the sliders sections and space it up about 5mm and then you just make up all the tags to pick up on the mounts. If you make the sliders longer in each direction then you can also sit the body on top of them and if you need to you can move the body back and forth to suit where tou put the motor. Another think. When I said you can move it back 3in an mount the rad in front well to do this you will have to mount the lights in the guards - I wanted the lights in the grill so I didnt go this way. The lights take up a fair bit of room. Better to just move the motor all the way back - you will have oil filter crearance issues but you can run a very small oil filter thats only about 2in long and you woul be lucky to hit that (this is what we run in the buggies to tidy up the front engine clearance issues) That rig that bush posted - there is a massive thread on it on outerlimits. It was in one of the mags here. Its got extra tailshafts welded to the diff housings to force the articulation to be equal and opposite on the axles which is why it only has the centre spring on the rear axle - although I think it now has very soft outboard springs as well. You can do it. I have $50 on him he'll do it, takers?
Just don't fool yourself that you have it done if the body is mounted. It is the last 25% that will kill you. (Electrical?)
I take it you have no rust (rust was put on earth by satan to torture us ), body , chassis, issues that need to be addressed before mounting the other body? Also do you plan on making mods (lifts, axles, trans, etc) as you transfer this above and beyond JUST mods related to the transfer of the body? Where are pics, need more PICS of progress??... |

The RR chassis is mint condition, no rust at all. The series firewall is mint too, but i may even end up using a brand new Defender firewall that I have in my basement, to allow me to mount the engine further back.
the drivetrain is all in good condition and running, with the exception of a broken ring gear in the front axle. otherwise everything is build and upgraded with HD shafts, lockers, suspension components, etc. the hard(est) part of the wiring is going to be the EFI, but I may be persuaded to dump it for a carb based on time and KISS constraints. |

Great project, glad you are doing it... 6 weeks though? Why not?
