D110 Project Status and picts
Here is a pict of the D110 we are building in the garage. Right now I am trying to get the pinion flange off of the back diff (late model D1 with a rotoflex rear coupling), then I will put the axles back together with 110 CV's, 23/24 spline Ashcroft axles, Ashcroft rear axles, the 4.1 Ashcroft R+P's (out of the 90 which will get the reverse cut GBR 4.75's), and ARB's, along with new seals, gaskets, etc. Then along with some wheels and tires this thing will be a rolling chassis!!
Here it is, Blister |

Not sure what you are refering to? Is it the D1 axle assembly or the rotoflex coupling?
If it is the later, then I assure you it will be quickly remedied when I torch the thing off, and install a new pinion flange and a Tom Woods CV jointed rear driveshaft. If it is the former then I ask you this: If you had another vehicle with the exact same axles, the same parts throughout and 3 sets of spare shafts to share between them, would you spring for a sals. rearend, just to say you are stronger? I have seen both break on the trail, and aside from its presumed strength advantage the sals is a pig, and unshaved tends to catch the rocks as you pass over. Keep in mind, I flog the crap outta my 90 and have never even twisted the Ashcrofts rear halfshafts (35's, Detroit, 4.1's). I think it will do rather well in this application (the D110). And if I break a halfshaft, then I will pay the required 15 minutes (adding time for a shaft broken at the extreme diff. end) and install a spare. Blister ps. Got the axles for a killer deal anyway. We will see how they work out. |

Way to Go Bill,
Just an idea to throw out there. Is now a good time to cut off the wimpy diff covers and weld on a solid diff cover? Then you can paint em so no one can spot you've changed? Some guys use the bottoms of gas bottles and such. There is someone in the UK making them. I've one on my front diff and it seems fairly solid (though it does have a couple of "battle scars" at this stage. I'm sure you have a cunning plan? Merv.

Damn Bill, your shed look a lot cleaner than mine. Although my dirt floor takes a lot less cleaning and my series 2a swb body would still be in one piece

Great setup Bill!! Glad to see it taking shape.
So is it getting a 300 Tdi? I am going to have to spend a little time on mine so it can hit the road again soon! It's not making the trip down to Las Cruces, but I'm sure it'll get down to San Antonio sometime. I'll be heading down there in July so maybe it'll make it then! -John

Yea, I'm a bit concerned with how much motivation I'll have with a sock 3.9 with 60's and 42's (and so are my friends)...But, I'm keeping the faith that with 5.89:1 gears in the axles and auto, I should be fine. Heck, I'm "only" adding about 600lbs. --D

I'm kinda curious what the heck you plan on doing with a 3.9 L sock anyway.. and how the heck is that going to move anything? honestly, though, if you're gearing the crap outta it and you don't plan on driving it on the highway, you should be fine. -John

Well, the ol'girl is never gonna' see any serious highway miles anymore. She's happiest on the trial, and my trailer. I'm most happy "sport wheeling"....That is 2-3 mile long "trails" that are insane. Of course the occasional Mnt. Blanka "expedition" is nice too...But car camping in the 90 on a 1000+ mile trip really doesn't float my boat.
Honestly, I never liked putting mucho' highway miles on her anyway...Not because I was uncomfortable, but because I just felt like I was tearing her up (unnecessarily) by doing so. To each his/her own.
