Question in the market for a Discovery - advice please

i have been a long time Rover fan.....and I am in the market to get a Discovery .... 96-98 i guess is the range i have narrowed it down to.

couple questions:

how do these trucks tow? can i pull another rig on a trailer w/ the Discovery?

what are the tow capacity specs?

and any other general info you'd like to point me to.....as far as what i should be looking for in these years.....any specific model to look for?

I have a trail rig/ daily driver.......so my wife will be the primary driver here......but of course i will need to, lets just say, "enhance" it a bit...if you know what i mean ........

thanks in advance

I assume that the old Discovery you are looking for. I would buy the newer Discovery2 because it's mutch more stable on the road and got a nicer interior than the previous model. The down side is that it's missing the cental diff lock.

96 is a dog year. 97 is better.

I would spend more and get a 98 or 99 SD discovery Series I.

They will tow 5500 but they are slow

cool...thanks for the response so far.

i've been checking out some of the links in the posts on this board.... Learning more on these......

what makes the '96 a DOG?

as far as suspension modification.....i guess the 98 and 99 Discoverys are equally as buildable?

i'm pretty set on getting one....just want to get the inside skinny so i know what i'm looking for

I've owned several Disco's; 94SE7, 96SD, 97SE, LSE, XD(Soon), 98 LE7and I drive Disco Series 2's at work everyday(Rover Sales Guide for now).
If the 96 is a late model year or has had the head work done then there is not much difference between 97. The 97 and 98 body styles offered more standard luxury options. Heated, power seats with real headrests etc... The 98 added a center armrest in the 2nd row seats.

Personally, I would not own another pre 97 Disco unless the price was right (under $5K). IMHO, the 97 + are the way to go for Series 1's. The 98-99's seem to be quite a bit more expensive in comparison to the 97's for very little appreciable difference.

The D2's are more road friendly but not worth the added $$$ to me. Something about them just feels less solid. They struggle a bit on our off-road course at the Centre. A lot more dragging on our rocks than the Disco Series 1's. Of course my D90 runs through it without any worry about which line you took.

Good luck,
Ross

excellent! now that's the kind of info i am looking for.

Basically...I would prefer the off rather than on road manner. If i only wanted onraod luxury i'd get a car.

I want a truck...... the Discovery was the choice because....this will "officially" be my wife's truck, but it will get a mild lift and some steel rims w/ radial muds maybe an ARB in the rear.

(and besides, a late model, coil sprung, straight axle 4wd is pretty damn cool in my book.)

nothing crazy, but she co-pilots w/ me alot on the trail and appreciates these mods. also i'm sure she'll hit the trails on milder stuff occasionally.

so the '97 sounds pretty much like a winner.

anybody else agree?

Matt

Are you in Ok City or Tulsey sooner? A bunch of us are wheeling at Disney March 2nd. There's a club in Tulsa that's putting it on and about 5 of us from the Kansas City club are going down.

The guy's name is d90_sooner. He works at a dealership. There are dealerships in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. I was wondering if he was coming to an event. That's why I said are you in tulsa or ok city sooner meaning d90_sooner.

If you are in NYC with a bit of a drive you can wheel with us.

www.roversclub.com

or

the guys up north

www.delrc.org

R.O.V.E.R.S. is not the most hard core group out there but as far as knowledge and helpfullness I would put us against anybody.

Sooner land

Fear Factory,

I'm in OKC. I spoke with Mark, the founder of OK Rovers last week. I'd love to go but being a Sales Guide My Saturday's are pretty busy. I still may go but I'll have to skillfully remove myself from our Centre. I've got to get my Disco trail ready before I go. Any ideas on front recovery points? The Disco I will take is tentatively sold so I don't really want to do anything permanent. Hopefully I'll have the XD on a truck and headed this way by Tuesday.

We just got a very nice 98 LSE Beluga black with Lightstone leather in from our buyer. It sure is nice...gotta love the 98 LSE wheels...
