What Axles are under Defenders (What years)

I am stationed in Manama, Bahrain (Middle East) and the junkyard is filled with these things. I am looking to tear some axles from underneath one of the to swap my D30/35 out assuming the Defenders (Which years) have at least a D44 in them.

Anyone here able to help...........did a search and didn't get much back?

uh, you dont want to do that. the defender axles for the most part are crap. they arent much stronger than your 30/35 combo at all. they have a notoriously weak birfield joint and a dana 30 sized carrier. the axleshafts (if you get a later one) are 1.25" dia 24 spline that neck down quite a bit. the earlier axles use a 1.15" dia 10 spline axle that just plain SUCKS.

so do the right thing, get some true bef like a D44 or bigger. there has got to be some other bigger trucks in the junkyard, right?

Yea, like 9-Volt said the stock axles arnt very strong. Most people who wheel defenders are swaping axle parts out for HD aftermarket stuff and there are now quiet a few of us going for dana swaps. If I was looking to swap axles in it wouldnt be from a defender.

Hey Jeeper was it your runner that had a pict of it in Petersons 4WOR. Seem to remember a built runner with a flashy paintjob parked on a rock from some strange place in there.

Thanks to both for the info, didn't know the axles were such crap. A guy I work with restores LR's and said that they came with D44's in some of the more current yrs, not sure how accurate he was about it though.

As far as my 4Runner, it's never been in a mag. There was one that was exactly like mine 6 months ago in Jet Black like mine, but it wasn't mine.

Thanks again...........ttyl
