It would be though to do, I looked into putting one into my 110 sometime back. It's long and very heavy (1200lbs range I think), some details here:
http://cgi2.x-pointcgi.com/~dieselrepower/index.htmlThe 4cyl would be easier and has been done. I'm going with a GM 6.2 because it's, cheap, fits better, is lighter (only about 650lbs or so), and has a wider RPM range (3700 VS 2500 for the cummins, and the GM can be turned up to maybe 4200 if you want to chance it). The RPM range is a biggy if you're keeping rover axles and t-case, if not then not a problem. I know a guy that was trying to fit the entire Dodge cummins drive line into a 101 Rover (engine, trans, t-case, and axles) but he gave up and sold off all the parts. For either the GM or Cummins I would suggest the NV4500. I will be using the NV4500 mated to the Rover LT230. All else stock this will give me a 3.13:1 5th gear high range for the hwy and 75:1 1st low for off road. The same set up will work for the Cummins by changing the input and bell housing, if you can deal with the length and weight. I hope this was not all redundant info and is of some use. |

5.9 in a Range Rover????
BOOOOHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!! Now, don't get me wrong, I'm all in favor of trying something new cool and functional, so I'm not in that camp at all (just ask me about my 80 and 145 inch Chevy powered LR's). Anyway, Timm (our local fabricator) has been measuring up a 109 frame to do such a conversion and he's come to the conclusion that the package is too damn tall to fit in the engine bay. He's talking about a 2 inch body lift on the 109 (he'd do it by raising the rear crossmember and bulkhead outriggers, I think). To do a 5.9 in a Range Rover would be an act of God. I don't think that there is enough room between the top of the axle and the bottom of the hood to do it. As it is, a Chevy 350 swap into a RR is a bit of a squeeze. I say don't let my razzing make you call it quits. Quite the opposite. Do your measuring, get under the hood of your RR and figure out what will really work in there. For my money, if I were re-engining a RR, I'd go with a 4.2 or a 350. Diesel you ask? Hmmmm, maybe that 4Bt Cummins, but NOT a 300Tdi (that new VW diesel is tempting though....). Later, Michael |

You know, I was talking to John about that body lift.
It actually sounds pretty nice, and the price is extremely reasonable IMO. The picture on his site makes the truck look really good, and considering the kit comes with damn near everything you need (short of tools and elbow grease), it just might make the Cummins installation work (dunno for sure though). Lots of options! Michael |
