Chile Challenge Carnage Picts Vol. 2

These picts are supplements to the Chile Challenge Carnage picts posted by John P. They show the fubar innards of the Detroit locker after a halfshaft break. And some picts of the twisted (720 degrees, not greater than 1000 degrees as previously posted) halfshaft. Look carefully at the end of the shaft and you can easily see the twisted material. Also note the shaft broke right at the line of the heat treatment (interesting). Hope someone is interested in seeing these. The take home message here is: If you have a rear Detroit in a LR, do not break a halfshaft.

Nani, nani booboo. Mine is bigger than yours is.....

You cannot really see from the pict that there is another sharp black line of the heat treatment right at the breaking point. I would be interested to see if a D70 diff. would fit in the stock location in the rear of a NAS spec D90 and still clear the gas tank. This interference would be even worse if you move the axle back like Doug M. is doing. I think he is going to use a fuel cell in the bed instead?

First thing Damien and I did when we got home was to check our rear shafts (We have detroits + ashcrofts also). Perfect. Whew! Ivor painted a line down mine for future reference.

Where to from here Bill? More Detroit or over to ARB?

Last I heard, he was going over to the darkside and getting an ARB. Especially after that superfast 1 hour ARB install!!!
