Now this is something new...

96 D1- This is one I havent seen or heard of yet... any suggestions appreciated...
So the temps have finally dropped out here. Yesterday, on the way to work I noticed that my temp gauge was not in its usual position. In fact it was hovering between "damn cold" and "running temp". Not that I mind the engine being cool, the heater and defrost work as they should but Im curious if this is an indicator of a bigger problem. Or maybe just a temp sensor or gauge?? Item of note. Since this is playing mainly on road, I recently removed the factory air box and dropped a cone filter on. (bumped my mileage up about 2mpg!!)
Anyone seen this or have any input?? Thanks!!

When this happened to me, it was due to the radiator being frozen solid.

Yeah, I was thinking about something like that, but everything seems to be flowing correctly, gets warm underneath, and the behavior continues even after driving for over an hour...Wouldnt a frozen radiator cause an overheat and send that gauge through the roof??

Maybe your thermostat is missing or stuck open?

How odd. Every radiator that I have seen frozen makes the motor overheat not run cold

I'm with Dave. I've had one Disco t-stat fail open and one closed (!?).

The open one didn't allow warm up during cold weather .... how's your heater output? Still cool too, or normally warm?

Nice warm and toasty.. thats what throws me off and makes me think its a sending unit, or the gauge itself...

Given that, I'd agree. Are both original? As long as you're in the neighborhood you might consider changing them at the same time.

I don't know the resistance specs on the sender .... anyone, anyone

I can't believe that anyone who has owned a Rover for any length of time considers the temp gauge to be anything more than a cute dashboard decoration

I think I might wait a while before doing anything at all. If the heater is working, the engine is warming up and the coolant is flowing (I went back and read the original post!). When mine froze up, there was no heat. Yes, bad things happened!

There are brand new Autometer oil pressure and coolant temp gauges on the bench for the Disco. They've only been allowed to "Age" for a coupla months, it's too soon to install them yet

When you do, you'll want to "glue" the gasket to the thermostat housing with a dab of grease / sealant so it stays in place while starting the bolts.

Otherwise its a PITA to hold in place and get the bits all lined up.

You talkin' 'bout me? Just because I have VDO guages doesn't make me cool.

But, the VDO guages themselves are very cool. Mostly because they work well.

Okay, new tstat in this weekend. Same damn thing.. except the gauge sits a little lower, so I found a good dash unit, $45 with a good temp gauge in it, and its on the way. Until then, does anyone have any input as to where the sensor is that controls this gauge? How about a price for the little bastard.. Thanks!!!

I think it is a single wire connection near the thermostat.

Two similar senders near the t-stat housing.

One is for the EFI, one is for the gauge......can't recall just now

Suppose you could unplug 'em one at a time and see what effect there is on the gauge "reading"

Well, the coolant temp sensor fixed the problem.. $20 or so. And as an FYI, the coolant sensor is a single wire unit, directly behind (if you are looking at the front of the truck) the ECU temp sensor, which is a dual wire.
Thanks for all the help and harrassment!!!
