Gauges
Well,
Since I'm ditching the WHOLE interior, thought I'd need the following: 1. RPM 2. Oil Pressure 3. Water Temp 4. Fuel Capacity 5. Voltmeter All are the 2 5/8 size in order to put them in pods hanging from the roof (if possble) Questions: A. Anything else as VITAL? strictly VITAL? B. Any reliable, cheap (no bling, reliable) brands/sources? C. Any specific specifications I need to highlight (electrical gauges) Thanks.

Well, since you already raised concern about auto box cooling I'd rate auto box oil temp higher than engine oil press.

mechanical vs electrical.
You won't want a mechanical oil pressure guage going to the roof of your truck. I've had good luck with http://www.egauges.com/ and summit and jegs also stock guages. I think you'll be fine with most name brand guages. Between the rover, mini and audi, I have quite a few aftermarket guages, and I haven't had one fail....and some are pretty damn cheap. I think you could go with a smaller guage pack and pod for oil pressure, volts, and coolant temp...then they come in a three gauge pod. I'd work in a oil pressure dummy light.

this isn't cheap, but it can do all you want and can be mounted to your cage

Cool - thanks, got the idea about the priority, maybe I'll do it as a light for the volt as Scout said...
Are the senders on the Rover "special" or can I use any common sender from egauges?

If your'e doing a diesel swap you net an EGT. Top priority for a tuned diesel in hot climate.

Yeah, have thought of that too...
Can I piggy back another question? What is the use of circuit breakers, could they be used as fuses? Ideally, I'd like to have a huge flat space in teh middle of the dash (taking out the stock dahs, heater and A/C condensor) with the countoura switches and fuses above each for easy maintenance, along with a start button and kill switched for the major components including a master kill switch. Would circuit breakers do the job of fuses but act in a much simpler manner?

Assuming it's a Turbo Diesel here's what I would do in order of importance:
Oil Pressure (Gauge or light) EGT Water temp Tranny temp Boost RPM Voltmeter Fuel gauge Speedo?? Maybe not necessary if not street driven. Just my opinion. Keep the vitals up front and visible!!

Given the propensity for Rover alternators to fail, I consider the voltmeter to be pretty important. While I like having a real oil pressure gauge, the light would serve this purpose better than for voltage monitoring-unless you had a comparator that would have a light for >12VDC and another for <12VDC.
For ease of installation, I prefer electrical gauges, recognizing their inherent shortcomings. As for brands, I'm an Autometer man. Do we really need the huge tach the Discos have? For that matter, do we REALLY need a tach at all? I'm thinking a tach from a Defender would fit my purposes much better. Lastly, if one is mounting the gauges somewhat out of the line of sight, it makes great sense to put an oil idiot light somewhere it can't be missed, perhaps one of those big-ass Autometer lights right on the top of the dash would be wise. Cool - but thing is, I won't have a dash per say...its gonna be a flat sheet of alum on a 1" tube frame with a MASSIVE cubby box.
The 2 1/16 gauges I am NOW interested in would be in pods and in the center, all electrical with countoura switches running down the center as well. Since no heater/AC, was thinking of putting the batteries in the middle under the dash, so amid both winches (which is better i guess). I'm such an electrical dweeb and I already hate it, so I'm not too comfy with these things... Any thoughts of fuses vs. circuit breakers?
