Chrysler CV joint upgrade kit
Ok guys, you are NOT going to believe this shit. You will think I am joking when you read this, but I am NOT. Here goes....
Steven Schuback was changing the front drivelines on his dad's Chrysler minivan and got them out tonight. They have a CV on each end covered with a boot. They were toast, so.... Timm Cooper started playing around and wondering about the CV's. He tore the boots apart and popped off the CV. Well......the CV that is in a Chrysler mini-van is the EXACT SAME FUCKING CV that comes in ALL RR's Disco's, D90's etc...(up until SII RR's and Disco's). The early 110 CV's are different, but the mini-van CV's fit right onto the LR axle shafts. SAME spline count. SAME internal star. SAME internal cage. SAME ball bearings. SAME SHIT. ![]() Cooper laughed and said 'HAHA' to all us coil-sprung losers who have K-car CV's in our trucks. I was pretty depressed and took a bunch of photos of the mini-van CV mounted ONTO a LR axle. I took side-by-side pics of the LR and Chrysler CV's, and even a shot with the LR CV mounted on the axle alongside the Chrysler CV. Anyway, I guess we know where to go for cheap replacement internal CV parts. If anyone wants to see the pics lemme know. I'll gladly forward them. No wonder Adam was breaking CV's. All we are driving on are K-car leftovers!!!!! Depressing ain't it??? Michael PS Do I need to remind you that the K-car was Lee Iacocca's brainchild? I feel like I need some medication now (or some sleep at least.....) |

Dude, you're a little late for April Fools!!
Hey, if this works, at least we have a cheap source of new CVs. I wonder how much Chrystler wants for one? Maybe NAPA? That is kinda depressing.. Oh well, such is the life of a Land Rover owner.. ![]() -John

Move the balls and cage over to the rover housing.

I think the idea is to pull the inner stuff out of the bell from the chrysler CV and throw it into the GKN bell to replace the star and cage after you blow 'em.
Cheaper than buying a whole new CV, but I wonder if the bell is weakened by breakage of internal components. I know I have one CV where I actually broke the bell, so that one is toast, but I have some others that might be salvagable. dunno.. -John

It would be interesting to install the balls and cage in a d90 bell to see if they are an exact fit. Did Timm measure the ball dia's with a mic? I also wonder if they both use the same materials, heat treatment, and surface finish.
Approx. $50 to replace the internal parts sounds pretty good to me. Rich |

Just out of curiosity, how many of the CV bells have survived a cage blowout. So far every CV cage I have toasted has taken out the bell. I even get stress cracks in the bell prior to blowing the cv. Maybe that is the weak link when you go with 32 spline hardware??? Can anyone shed some light on this? This is probably less of a factor on d90s than it is on the heavier Range Rover.

Prolly also a function of how soon you stop, and how much moving you have to do before disassembly?

Way,
When you blow up the bell, does it seem like the cage and the star go at the same time? Does it take the axleshaft with it too? Looks like you're getting failure on the bell and then when it goes, it takes out the cage and star by not holding them together anymore. -John

NEVER broken a bell...I'm almost certain that it's the star then cage.
Never broken a stock front axle either...Alway's the Birf. --D

I've broken everything except the cage.. Of course, once I put in the upgraded cages, the stars have gone, the axleshafts have broken right at the CV, and I had one bell that actually necked down and fractured. Seems like usually whatever happens also ruins the axleshaft.

I always break the bell and then the cage expands. Here is another pic of some of the pieces. I was using the GBR heavier cages when I had the kit. I would always here a loud boom when they broke. It was similar to the sound of a ring and pinion when it explodes (really really loud). I usually do not move at all before disassembly either. Who knows. It is still a mystery to me. They always seem to let go on a flat section of the trail right after a difficult obstacle. Bill seem to think at the end that it was either improper installation (can't see how the things could be improperly installed especially since I did not install them and had a rover mechanic do the job--put them in the same time I had 24 spline ARB installed) or that I chose a thin grease rather than oil.
Way Edit: I have never broken a 23 spline inner axle. I just broke the bell. Always bell then CV. It may be due to the vehicle though and how tightly the wheels are turned??? Mine always break at super low speed also. The tires are not even spinning on surface?? Last edited by Way; 04-03-2002 at 03:05 PM. |

Hmm.. Strange... Oh well, I can't explain that one. Mine usually go in the middle of whatever obstacle I'm doing and usually when there's some wheel slipping that then grabs. To me, that says shock loading. I think they've mostly broken when I had the wheels turned, duh, that's when the joint is at it's weakest, but I think I also broke one going straight ahead. Strangely enough though, they've been pretty quiet when they went.
Funny thing is that I've NEVER been able to salvage the inner axleshaft. The splines ripped off of one when the star expanded and 2 have sheared off at the step going down to the 32 splined part. That's a pretty bad stress riser, so I can see why. And every time, I've ended up with a star in little pieces. So do you have some extra inner axleshafts laying around that you want to get rid of then? ![]() -John
