what’s a Koenig pto winch worth?

Friend of mine has one in his garage floor. The winch’s owner claims it worth a grand. I havent opened it up to see its guts but I suspect its in good shape. could this winch be easily fitted to a 2.5NA Defender 90?

came off a IIa 109. dont know any more than that. pretty sure the winch wasnt original on that truck judging by the cobbled together chain and drive shaft setup. somebody chopped a notch in the bottom of the front crossmember for the driveshaft!

lol, I guess they didn't realise thats what the big hole was for

1000 seems extremely high for a Koenig PTO.

One that looked like it had never been used, recently sold on ebay for about $400. Looked almost like someone had just uncrated it. I'd have bought it except they didn't want to ship it.

I have a funny feeling you can still buy the same thing new for not much money. A grand sounds like a shitload for anything that's not a very rare Series 1 tractor implement.

PTO winches are a dime a dozen new, so to speak. The Koenig King 100, which this probably is, was a very good, simple, and reliable winch, but is no longer made and hasn't been for over 30 years.
What's harder to find are the transfer case PTO units that were part of the transfer case driven setup (there was also a crank driven version). Land Rover bottom PTO units are about a $1000US new.

That said, $1,000 is way overpriced for a Koenig.

If it's a complete set up in good shape, $4-500 is a fair price. Although I paid $500 for my 109 that had one already on it. Of course, that was 30 years ago. lol

Koenig

I can guarantee Ive had more koenigs than anyone here. A nice one that is complete and specifically made for a rover is worth a grand. The engine driven ones are worth even more. Sure you could get a warn electric for the same money, but the koenig is a different animal. It would flat out rape the warn. Koenigs were used on a lot of different trucks though and if someone did a retrofit to the one in question and did some rigging to make it work, its not worth much more than $100.

Are parts available for the vintage winches?

I have one with a bunch of busted parts that I'd really like to put back togather for all the reasons a person would want a REAL winch.

If it's the same thing as Daan's PTO winch (pictured in this thread) then you can buy them brand new (I know because it was delivered to our workshop) and for not a lot of money, relatively speaking.

That series III is fawkin ugly, but I love it! The winch is definitely not original ( the chain drive even less so!) if he doesnt want to lower his price I found one in need of a bit of love for cheap. Anyone ever fit an engine driven PTO to a 2.5 NA diesel? can one off a 2.25 petrol be made to fit?

A lot of the parts are off the shelf power transmission parts, shafts, bearings, gears. But some were proprietary Koenig, and the housings aren't available off the shelf. But the King was used on many different vehicles. There were two versions, a low slung and and upright, and either would work on a Land Rover, though the one commonly seen is the low slung. If you had a bottom PTO you could easily connect it to a Koenig winch. Ramsey also made a PTO unit for the Land Rover, but those are extremely rare.

I came really close to having a supply of NOS parts, actually all of Koenigs remaining parts stock. Sometime around '85 I called them to get some parts, and was on the phone a long time with one of the people there, who'd worked for them since the early 60's. He gave me prices on some parts, then mentioned that they were in the process of inventorying everything to sell as a lot. I asked him to send me the list when it was done. Unfortunately, I put it out of mind and realized a year or so later I never heard from him. I called back, he'd retired, and they'd sent the parts off to someone who regularly bought discontinued parts. Man did I kick myself.
I've not been able to track down where the parts actually went.

What would a complete unit, koenig 100 with all the driveline, control box in great shape go for. I have it on my willy's cj3b. I would like to the winch. Its been on this jeep since i bought it in 1962. Still works perfectly and looks great.
