now i just have to figure out what to use for a flywheel. a 300gd flywheel is too expensive and a 240 only has a 8ish inch disc. i have a chevy small block flywheel but the bolt pattern isnt close enuff. i want to use the 10.5 inch disc the truck already has. suggestions?

I'm just throwing this up against the wall - don't hate me if it sounds stupid...

What about adapting the GM flywheel onto the MBZ flywheel? Or making a plain flywheel surface that would mount to the MBZ flywheel the way the pressure plate would?

IIRC, the MBZ flywheel has a fairly deep section, no?

that would make the whole mess too tall.

Yes...

BUT - does a later-model GM SBC (one-piece ream-main seal) leave you enough material to re-work it for the MBZ?

I know the bolt pattern is somewhat smaller than the old 2-piece rear-main engines. Just don't know by how much.

And another 'OR' - GM 60 degree V-6's (2.8 / 3.1 / 3.4) like from an S-10. Would that give you a decent compromise?

Here the flywheel from 4x4Labs. It is drilled for 10.5" and 11" GM clutch (your choice). It uses a $110 Ford V8/V10 swap (search 2000 E-350 V10 for the app) and it is just awesome.

Writeup of the kit here:
/forum/toyota-truck-4runner/868339-4x4labs-com-om617-mercedes-diesel-adapter.html

And full writeup of installing it on the engine and what it takes to balance it (I just got it back balanced yesterday):

Large aluminum flywheel with replaceable center steel section:

I'm following this one with interest as well, and I'm really curious about the kit to bolt it to the LR auto box

86-91 5.0 mustang flywheel will work with minor mods(one hole needs elongated and rebalanced). uses a 10.5 disc. 1/4 inch spacer between flywheel and crank makes the stack height correct if using a 1/2 inch plate for adapter plate. i will be taking donations so i can quit my job to have the time to finish up the swap.

Freakin' Sweeet.

What's the starter situation in this scenario?

Well I guess I should show pics of my progress, its slow but we are doing this from scratch so what do you accept.
And since no one has really built an adapter for this, I had to do this on my own, with the help of Chester who is doing all the fab work.
I did get the bell housing adapter plate from Robert Davis. But Chester had to fab up a torque converter for the Land Rover Disco Trans to mercedes .

Here you can see the adapter plate from Robert Davis.

And this is the one Chester made from scratch.

Not to overly hijack - but if that body is nearly as nice as it looks, I'd do a fair bit of driving to get a hold of that.

So is there any word on Roberts kits being near completion for sale? Do you have any plans on offering the TC adaptor?

Did you guys compensate for the external balance on the OEM mercedes flywheel? They are externally balanced to they have to be reinstalled on the engine the same as they were otherwise you get a little vibration...

Like Cruiser said, mark the flywheel how it came off the engine and have it spun by someone who balances flywheels. Many are neutral but some are not. If you're flywheel isn't neutral you'll want to have your new adapter balanced to match it.

By the way, nice work on that. You're not worried about the aluminum fatiguing and cracking?

Are you going to set that in there crooked? I hate how that looks. Ghetto. I'd re-index that adapter and cut the oil pan. Or install a Chrysler Slant-Six.
