Chile Challenge '03 Head Count
It is about time to start thinking about who is going to the Chile Challenge '03. It will be held February 19th through the 22rd '03, in Las Cruces NM.
Here is the LC4WDC's page on the event: http://www.zianet.com/lcfwdc/chile.htm (they are even giving away a Jeep Wrangler) Anyway, the sign up forms are not avail. yet, but should be soon. I will let everyone know. I propose the same trail order as in years past: Habanero Falls - wednesday Tabasco Twister - thursday Patzcuaro's Revenge - friday Rocotillo Rapids - saturday This has worked out good in the past Anyway, you can post here or email me privately at billritchie@kingwoodcable.com, and I will get a roster posted on the internet somewhere. Should be a great year this year, with many "new" old rigs (Doug M's, Greg J's ?, and others). As far as lodging goes, Sandi and I usually stay at the Hampton Inn (good local, right next to a prerun gas station). And they don't mind if you wrench on the trucks in the parking lot. Thats it for now, Billster billritchie@kingwoodcable.com |

Still considering it.....
What, is it about a 12 hour drive from Vegas to Cruces? I just for the first time looked up the map and saw where it is. I just might have to bail on that considering how far away it is. IF IF IF I can tie it into a scouting trip to NM, then I *might* be able to go. I'm still mulling it about in my mind (hate to fence sit, but.....).

I'm with serious one on this one. I think it's about 8 hours for me. Denver to Las Cruces? I don't think it will happen. Not too mention my lack of big tire would keep me off of most of the trail.

I'm in. I'm buying both front, rear 3rd members, and rear axels from Shane. Do you guys recommend upgrading my front axels or stock will do just fine. I might run the 35's or the 37's. Also do I have to have a winch for the challenge?

Depends on your driving style. I would say with 35's and a light foot and minimal front locker usage, you are okay.
You can run without a winch, but there are winch only obsticles on just about every trail, and you will be strapped up those. Doug M. went winchless for a few years at the CC. Glad to here you are coming along. Billster |

If I can get the time off I'm going to go. We'll see what happens have to put in for leave after the first of the year. I think I'm with Tis 25+ hrs with a stop in Dallas to fix stuff that I'm sure I will break by then.

Sheeze RR. You're bitching about Denver to LC in a RANGE ROVER? Man...
S1, Don't worry about the haul...1/2 the drive and stay at my place on the way down...We'll leave from here first thing a.m., and be in LC in 4.5 hours max. Ya' won't need a winch...Just get between two who have them...If you have spare birfs, (and can change them QUICK in the field) then run the 37's...If not then stick with the 35's. You'll do fine. O'yea. Don't let the "EXTREEME TRIAL" designation scare you. It's really not all that bad. Rotocillo is the toughest IMO, and even then it's not as bad a Penrose (IMHO). One last thing (too much halloween candy!), I think we should scrap Habinero falls...That trail is just way too short. I say we run one of the other three twice...Maybe: Patzquaro's Twister Patzquaro's Rotocillo Or: Twister Patzquaro's Rotocillo Rotocillo That way if someone breaks on any of the day's they won't miss the killer stuff the following day's...Plus you'll get a chance to clean the lines you missed the first day on Rotocillo on day 4! --D

D,
Remember I'm just running 235/75/16's -or- my 31x10.50x15 swampers, so are you *sure* I can do the CC??? I mean, yeah, I knew I could do UH, but those pics of the CC make UH look like a cake walk. I was thinking 35's were the norm, and I'm way under that. If I have a place to crash half-way it wouldn't be too bad. Incentive would be the wagon-train we'd create would be too f-in cool to not do it. Still fence sitting.... Shouldn't you be out trick-or-treating????

Man I'm digging this snappy server speed!!
S1, you should have at least 33's...But I'm sure you could dig something up by then. If not permanent, then temporary. Again, don't let the pics and descriptions fool you. The trials are primarily wide open. Meaning you don't have nasty squeezes, and lean-overs into rocks and such. Mostly LC is a bunch of big ledge climbs with a serious break-over associated with them. The name of the game is about a 104+ wheel-base, and a healthy amount of lift/clearance....Tip-over isn't a major concern with 99% of the main trails there (again IMHO). Narrow track helps on Petzquaro's...But not necessary...Major lift/clearance helps on all the trails...But again, not necessary. 35's are nice, but everything can be done on 33's if you don't mind getting hung up more than the big tire guy's. Body damage is all a matter of how crazy you want to get. If your mellow (and a good driver), you'll come out without a scratch. Start pushing the envelope and you might get a ding or two, and at worst a flop. Most of the obstacles don't have a major penalty associated with them (read several point roll). --D

Thanks for the clarification on the trails. I run a lot of stuff here in CO that the 33-35 minimum is in effect for. I need to get better skids for the tranny/cats, but I don't mind draggin belly on skids. It's the diff's that are a pain. I really appreciate the real word advice that you gave Serious one. That makes alot of difference. It makes me consider the time more. IF only on 32's, how much lift would you say is doable then? I am very close to 5 in the front, and at 5 in the rear. TIA j

We can chat about the run order and such, what do you think Rich?
As far as tire size goes, we did have a Sami with us that was on 31's on Habanero, and a Cherokee that was running 32's on two of the trails year before last (who spanked us on some of the falls). They seemed to do okay with proper line choice. Your diffs are pretty bulletproof, Mike, I think you would do fine. You could send me some wheels and I will get these MTR's mounted for you so you had some 32" tires (235/85/16's). Or Alan has some 16x7" wheels we could mount them on for cheap (about $60 wheel). Alan Dobbs is also coming with his 411 Mog (you know the one with the 65" wheelbase). Anyway, later for now, Billster btw. I haven't heard from you Doug M. that you are a definite? Will the truck be ready in time? |

O'yea, she'll be ready by then...Heck, she's ready enough now (see other post). The issue now is whether or not it will still be in ONE piece by then.
![]() I am defininte...The only little tinny wennie little issue that might crop up is the fact that my wife and I are expecting our second kiddo' January 15ish. If my wife hasn't recovered well enough (of course) I'll bag the trip. If she's fine I'll take our first kiddo' with me and give my wife a break and take-off for a few days. I think you get the picture! --D

Ok, Here's the list of stuff that must be done before I go:
1: unpack all the boxes in our new house (non-negotiable) 2: Clean out garage (need to find rover parts) 3: Pull out front and rear diffs in my D90, replace R&P sets 4: Get new Ashcroft crawler box 5: install said box 6: Build up our D90 #2 7: Get new trailer to haul both 8: find the money to pay off all this shiat. -John
