Does anyone know if the gates have already been installed?

I am guessing that the snow wont melt until the very end of June. early August opening maybe?

I am guessing there are going to a lot of trees on the trail this year. I have easily removed 40 from trails in the last month as the snow melts back. from 6 inches up to 48" this past weekend.
I will see if I can make that weekend

Just trying to be optimistic!

I have seen milder winters when there were 6-8' drifts right about this time of year for several miles at the highest elevations of the trail.

Down at Hermit there was no snow, the gate was open and the climb was devoid of snow.

We got in so far in turning around wasn't an option and made it through the worst drifts I've seen this time of year trenching some seriously off-camber nasty icy stuff for traction well over a mile with a shovel, breaking through on-trail ice bridges created by run off, etc . . . only to find the gate into Blue Lakes locked just past the lakes on the main road out.

The now permanently closed route in/out from Red Lake wasn't EVEN an option given what we had just been through the day prior!!

I remember going in over Forestdale pass with deep snow coming in from Red lake, then finding myself on the back side of that locked gate.

For Deer Valley the 6 weeks starts when the water content on the BLK snow sensor drops below 1.0 inches

Based on past data at the Blue Lakes Snow Gauge, the average date the trail would be open is July 18, but could be as early as June 24 or as late as August 20th.

Yeah, we didn't have to deal with all this freakin' greenie crap on public lands much of my life but still treaded lightly and respectful of the land using common sense.

If you tread lightly on top of six feet of snow do you leave any sign of having done so once it melts?

Geez, it's not new news to me by any means but it is ironic that we now need a phaqing electronic sensor to replace common sense long lost!!!

The actual article from the June/July 2017 In Gear on Pg. 15:

https://cal4wheel.com/phocadownload/...jul-17-web.pdf

NORTH DISTRICT
CONSERVATION PROJECT
This summer the Deer Valley 4wd Trail (19E01) will be reopened immediately six weeks after the snow melts. Last summer the Motherlode Rock Crawlers hosted a work party on the Blue Lakes side of the trail to start working on the corrective actions needed to get the trail back into S&G 100 compliance.
Three more work parties are planned for this summer to continue with the trail repairs. What we need is clubs and individuals to come out and help get the trail back open. Please put these dates on your schedule and try to attend at least one of the weekends. Here are the scheduled work weekends:

September 9-10 - Align trail location/Tree removal
September 16-17 - Rock delivered/Armor first river crossing and other trail sections
September 23-24 Wrap-up project

The snow should be six weeks gone by then, fallen trees on trail are another story.

as of June 13th the Blue lakes sensor has 25 inches of water content

should be dry there in about 2 weeks.
then the 6 week clock starts so I would guess trail opens first to second week in August

If I had to guess, I'd step out on a limb and venture that it likely snowed there yesterday!

Being as we seem to be in an old school weather pattern, it wouldn't surprise me if we got another wetting later this month (minimal as it would likely be), perhaps even bringing a bit or hail or snow flakes with it at that elevation.

Out of curiosity, where do you view that sensor data?

thanks Dale.

you need to look at sensor 3
Snow Water Content
once that indicates under 1.0 the 6 weeks starts
currently at 20.9"
maybe 10 days out it should be gone

Melting fast, almost 2.5" per day. 11.90" today so hopefully less than a week. Maybe open by the first of August?

5.3 water content and melting fast, a bit over 3" per day.
