FLAGSTAFF - The U.S. Forest Service says a Village of Oak Creek man has been banned from national forests in Arizona for two years after admitting he was building forest trails without permission.

The Arizona Daily Sun reports 74-year-old Gerald Griffin was also ordered to pay $1,000 in restitution.

According to the Forest Service, Griffin admitted to building trails in the Red Rock Ranger District a couple of days a week for the past three years in order to "help trail users."

Forest officials said illegal trail construction causes erosion and can affect archaeology, plants and wildlife.

But Walt, who does run a bulldozer through the National Forests?

Message for Cliff P: "CommiNazi" is a contradiction in terms. Communists are ultra-left while Nazis are ultra-right. Both tend to have been authoritarians, however; probably what you were intending to say. So please say it; 'authoritarian'. As in "dictators"--another of your terms.

Ever consider how these "dictators" operate? You elect them. Can you think of a better way to operate than electing your representatives to run your government? If not, better to concentrate on educating yourself and voting accordingly rather than spewing 'low-information voter' misinformation in the comments section.

Rick D: Well put. Things change.

I too backpacked The Canyon long ago. The new permit system--particularly since the Fee System was enacted, has actually made the physical world in the Canyon better (e.g. less excrement and urine in your campsites; dispersed or designated), and also made the process of obtaining a permit more user-friendly and flexible.

Without their permit system the place would be overrun in Spring and Fall--hardly the experience folks want in that place. In other words, some controls are beneficial overall. Same for all public commons.

What's funny about a Forest Service Road engineer, who bragged on this board about running a bulldozer through the National Forest every year, criticizing an old man who built some trails and was fined $1000 and banned from public land?

When Keyes' antics were investigated he was found to have illegally operated an excavator on Arizona State Trust land and ultimately managed to scapegoat the Arizona Game and Fish Department. AZGFD was fined for their illegal activities in building roads......about $50. They were not banned from public land.

do you really think they are going to have a sign posted with his picture saying "banned from public lands... if you see this man call local police or rangers?

and that's what road engineers do, is build roads. and you're still criticizing him after all this time.

punishments won't always be equal. $1000 is letting the guy off pretty cheap IMHO.
