CA - Are you a Cal4 member? If not, why?

Are you a Cal4 member? If not, why not?

By Suzy Johnson, In Gear Editor/Webmaster

Keeping public lands open in the United States is a game of numbers. Our opponents have hundreds of thousands more than we do, and millions more in their war chests. How have they been so successful? Because people think they are doing something good when they give their green to the Sierra Club.

While the 'greenies' are sitting back feeling all warm and fuzzy because they paid their dues, those of us who like to put rubber on the dirt instead of boot soles are down in the trenches fighting on a shoestring. There are so many OHV groups going in all different directions, asking for money, begging for volunteers, and always asking their members to contact their lawmakers. You would have to write a lot of checks to a lot of OHV organizations to get that same warm and fuzzy feeling. So instead, you may choose to just 'lurk'. You get this newsletter for free, you can go to our events, you still have trails that you can use, so why join?

Why? Because we need you. This newsletter actually costs money. The events are put on year after year, often by the same core group of volunteers who have helped for decades, and they are tired. And don't even get me started on what it took (and still takes) to keep your local trail systems available to you. Someone has to do it, why not you?

Sure, you could send your dues to a national organization that seems like a good choice. We actually hope you do. But if your funds are limited and you only have one or two OHV organizations that you can support, why not join us? We know your trails because we use them too. We know your legislators because they are our legislators too. And we know how the state government works because we live here too. We have won some battles, and with your help we can win some more.

For just $45 per year (less than $4 per month), you can get that warm and fuzzy feeling that you are helping with the numbers game, and you are doing something good. Why not?

Cal4 and CORVA here.
Belt and suspenders at the state level, and through them, organizational membership at the national level.

This keeps me in the loop at state and national level and allows me to focus my efforts where they are most effective, at the local level.

Life member in Cal4 and BlueRibbon Coalition.

Will probably add life membership in UFWDA either later this year, or early next year.

Also, volunteer at events as needed.
Complile information for a newsletter and email it out via the Access Army google group.

Track land use issues across the state, and nation.

Compiled economic data from forest service user data and financial data to evaluate the economic impact per forest.

Work to keep trails and our public lands open as time allows.

Didn't like what I saw in CAL4 members and didn't want to be associated with them.

OK. Fair enough, not everyone gets along (this is after all, OHV folks were talking about, many of whom have a fiercely independent streak). If you don't want to join Cal4, consider CORVA (vice versa or both). If neither of those tickle your fancy (or additionall), consider a national organization... or engage as a volunteer at a local level on your local trails.

I appreciate the Cal4 editorial, and agree FWIW, but however you choose to engage, ENGAGE! Membership is good, action is even better. Both are best.

I recently joined cal4wheel when I became more aware of how vast the problems are in our recreation in regards to land closures.
One thing that I DO really like and appreciate about cal4wheel is that you guys have a place for member input.
On thing that I feel BRC NEEDS TO HAVE!
There are a LOT of people (like me) that are just waking up to the closures of our trails and how it's happening and they're PISSED, passionate and want to help. Not just donate cash and sit and wait and hope something happens.
Cal4wheel has meetings, events and a forum to post ideas.
I live I'm Reno, nv. , so meetings are hard, but...the org. Is local enough that I can help in volunteering at events and such.

Member relations are a BIG thing, IMO!!

Was for a long time, but when it comes down to it every single organization is against something I enjoy. I wheel, I hike, I MTB, and anything else I can think of. There are parts of Sierra Club (Yosemite?) I am for, and obviously things I am against. I don't have the time I used to that I can dedicate but will do what I can when I can. I drink Sierra Nevada and I go to REI. I am not all for an organization whose core would have a hard time walking a mile, but I do support a lot of their efforts and will go on more runs etc..

Well Suzy asked the question... "why not?" I've been a Cal4 member for a long time, and contributed for a couple of years by writing the "Jeep Whisperer" column in In-Gear. I have a lot of history with Cal4 and it's clubs, and have spent some quality time close up and personal with it's inner workings, and I believe that, one day and under the right leadership Cal4 can actually be what it claims to be, but that time isn't now.
I've seen the actions of the Cal4 leadership, and the ambivalence of the board from the beginning of this administration, and I have profound problems with actions taken, the absence of a moral center, and lack of professionalism, right up to statements made in the current In-Gear, which I will probably post separately.
History proves that there is no point talking to the leadership or to the BOD... they are blind to what has happened and supported by the Cal4 family that supports them without question. The only way to register my vote is with my membership, so until I see an organization that is moving forward instead of backward, like may others, I'm walking. I see no option.
There are other organizations that are professionally run and actually making a difference. Cal4 isn't one of them right now. When it is I'll join up.
