Post Internet: Friend or Foe?

<FONT COLOR="green">"An observation that came out of the recent hearings and negotiation sessions with the Center for Biological Diversity - BLM lawsuit has revealed an interesting bit of information.

Apparently, The Center for Biological Diversity printed many pages of
derogatory remarks found on some OHV bulletin boards and other related sites for use in the lawsuit they filed against the BLM. Negativity of the OHV community towards the BLM and environmental groups did not assist the Intervenors in this case.

Please remember that the Internet is available to all and remarks you make on the Internet are available to all. Once posted, words become part of a large archive. Those words can be extracted and used out of context to convey an entirely different meaning than what was originally intended.

Wow that's pretty interesting. Do you have any links or further information about this?

I wouldn't doubt it if Sierra Club or other environmental organizations have people scouring off-road related websites on a daily basis. Thats one reason I cringe when people start spouting off threating to kick some greenies ass or something, once again just more fuel for their fire....

And taken out of context some of the things I see typed could be very dangerous in their hands

If the CBD provided copies of the printouts to the BLM, the copies are FOIAble, meaning they are releasable to the public under the FOIA - the Freedom of Information Act. The BLM or Dept. of Interior should have regulations outlining the process for requesting copies of documents under FOIA. Most of the time, it's as easy as writing a letter requesting copies of the printouts provided by CBD or any other party and state that the request is made under the Freedom of Information Act. However, it's important to review the reg's to find out what exactly the requirements are to request information under FOIA.

Take care,

Maybe we should start joining those organizations and show our side but as a member of the Sierra Club. How would that be, roll into a Club Meeting sporting a fat off road rig w/ 44" tires rippin through the lot! But seriously it wouldn't be bad to know exactly what they are doing. It appears they know what we are doing.

I used ho know a guy who did this. It seemed to me that he ended up getting a large ration of shit for BOTH sides in the precoss. Ya know, the greenies were like, "you dirty off-roader," and the off-roaders were all up with "ya dirty greenie." Any way. I try to follow a couple green mailing lists to try to keep up on that front.

DRM,
Did you find out anymore about this from the LUN mailing list? I'd really like to persue trying to get the statements and printouts that were used. If possible try to find out when and where these hearings took place. Then I would at least have a reference to use when requesting a document.

When things are taken out of context they can turn a harmless sentence into something else. I do agree that we all need to watch what we say and keep it constructive. As far as greenies watching us I would bet on it since we have no hiden agenda, all we want is access to the National Land we pay for. Greeies on the other hand are the ones that are underhanded and sneeky. If they can't get you to see it their way then they sue you.

Most of the time you can signup for their mailing lists.
I get info from SUWA all the time.
I use a hotmail account that is not associated with wheeling.
