406 or 416 axles

Any leads on axles? Like Surplus places.
Guess im in the wrong neck of the woods for mog axles. (Houston tx area.)
I would like a set of 416 axles or 406's. Everyone does Rockwells, have set under my crawler. Want more axle clearance for the mud ruts.

Trying to get things going on a Mud/Street truck idea.
I have leads on Surplus Military Tires and Rockwells..

I have a set of 406 (406 and 416 use the same axles) for sale for $2500 for the set. Call me at 585-377-7164 to discuss.

If you want the Mog axles for mud or rocks, you can't beat them. If you are planning to run them on the street at highway speeds they are not the right axles. The portal boxes do not hold very much oil, and they heat up if you run them for very long at high speeds,

If you do decide to go with the Mogs, then definately get them from Von. I've done a good bit of business with him, and he is a stand-up guy.

Good luck.

Robert

You have a link to you build on your rig? I would love set of Mogs but the cost and none in my neck of the woork. Kills the hole budget when i can buy Rockwells for $800 a set.
But im just in the planning stage on this build.

For $2500 you are getting 4.5 ton axles with air lockers already installed, not to mention the 20"+ of ground clearance under the differential. By the time you finish building a set of Rockwells or Dana 60s you will be just as deep into them.

The only thing that you really need to do to the Unimogs to be able to use them is to make a set of pinion conversions. I did a write up on making your own conversions a while back. Let me know if you need me to dig it up for you.

That and the R & P/axle shafts in a rock (or any axle without portals) needs to be twice as
strong as a mog axle, since only half the torque is on most of the axle. Only the ouput gear/stub shaft
sees full torque.

Can you even get selectable lockers for a rock and at what cost? ARB's have to be a grand for each end
if they make them.

What about brakes? Cut down the stock disk rotor on a 406 and add some 1 ton calipers.

1985 disk 406 front axle is 612 lb, minus stock coil spring bracket tabs (cut them off) and calipers, but does include stock drag link, tie rods, rotors, hubs, and aftermarket pinion conversion.

Use a spidertrax 9 front housing and ARB, weight drops to 519

Here are weights of mog stuff.......

Friend of mine just put $2300 into 2" shafts and a locker for ONE of his rockwells to hold up to 47" LTB's, plans to do the other in the future. Just something to keep in mind.
