Custom disk brake hubs, machining questions

Okay I have a set of of 20" x 8.5" Take-A-Part wheels that are standard rockwell bolt pattern. I want to use them because of the negative offset to keep my portals covered as well as the brakes covered. They are also a DOT approved wheel and should hold my 395 Goodyears rather well.

I want to make an adaptor that uses all 10 bolts (16mm) of the lower portal gear and thread the backside of the wheel mounting flange with the stock 8 on 6.5" bolt pattern and use button head allen key bolts safety wired after torqued to retain a stock chevy rotor to the backside of the flange. Before I do this I want to drill the face of the mounting flange to accept the rockwell bolt pattern and press the studs in from the back as per norm but once the rotor is mounted it will cover the studs.

The stock 10 bolts will mount all inside the standard 8 on 6.5" bolt pattern but I have noticed that the holes are all the right size for the 16MM bolts but that there is 2 different 5 bolt patterns in the 10 bolt circle. They are slightly tweeked from the other but I am having a hard time figuring out how to input them into CAD. Does anyone know the correct bolt circles for the hub bolts or better yet have them in Cad already.

I need to know the stock dia of the wheel mounting flange as well as the overall diameter. I know that the bolt pattern is 6 on 8.75" but what is the stud and lug nut size and thread. How large should the hole for the stud be for the proper friction fit/interference?

I want to do everything in CAD first to make sure that there is no interference before I have the hubs made or spend hours making them.

The reason I want to do it this way is if the bolts on the rotor walk out I don't loose my wheel but they shouldn't if they are safety wired after they are on and I want the rockwell rims.

dont you dare cut or weld on those 2.5 ton combat wheels

by your description im getting that you need a ten lug set up.

if so then there are 5 ton combat wheels just like those in your pic but they have the 10 hole pattern and are 20 inch

I will be using the wheels in my picture. The lower portal gear on the 406/416 unimog axle uses 10 (16mm) bolts to mount the wheel hub to the gear. I don't need 10 bolt wheels. I also will not modify these wheels other than be adding a 20" insert to them.

uhmmmmm

say, you wouldn't have another set of those laying around, would you?

I'll measure the lugs tomorrow if no one gets to this first. They're pretty big, and so are the studs. I need to look at something on my Rockwells anyway.

they're his wheels and he can cut em up if he wants. If i could have afforded a set i would have cut the shit outtah em and re-centered, but i went weld on locks instead.

I AM NOT MODIFYING THE WHEELS…… I AM MAKING A NEW HUB…..For my UNIMOG Axles…which uses the 6 bolt rockwell bolt pattern to fit the wheels I have, and incorperating an 1 ton disk rotor to the back of it.

See the 10 (16mm) bolts in the centre that I am talking about now…. I don't want anything to do with 5 tons...

Okay I got some time to play on the computer to put the measurements into the CAD. Here is what I have come up with I just need to confirm the measurements for the stud from a rockwell 2.5 axle and allowance for a press fit for the stud.

So here is what I have now. I made the adaptor a 2 piece setup that will be overall 3.25 wide with the rotor as and wheel adaptor.

Here is the hub base.

Here is the wheel mounting plate which also has the threaded holes to retain the 1 ton rotor.

WMS FRONT

WMS REAR

Crappy Paint of the assembly.

I may have a nice setup for you here. My rotors are to be in this week and I will then post up all the pics and info.

For now I will say it uses the stock mog hub, which you can redrill to the 2.5 ton pattern. Give me a day or two to get the rest of this installed and tested on my XJ.

Thats alot of work for just keeping a set of rims and dirt off your rotors and boxes. Weps actually has a cool design for disk brakes and rims these days are pretty reasonable. I actually bought 4 spare hubs..truned them down and bought a bunch of brackets off Kabuki for my disks. The plan is to weld up the boxes and get them stress relieved after the brackets are on.

The WEPS stuff I thought was for 404's and I don't think they will work with my 416's. I have lots of portals as I have nearly 2 extra axles buut need more front parts.

Thoses 53's on the 416's will be fine...

Well also the work I am doing it to make the soon to be very common 2 piece 20" wheels easy to use for the people like me trying to keep the width down.

Here is a site offloading some US military SEE components. These are 406 based, similar to the Case Mogs. Not sure if you were looking for a rear axle, but the price seems fair.

BTW - It says on their site that they are looking for someone to take their inventory... I am sure that someone on here may be interested!

I will talk to the father in law as he wil be the one doing most of the work on these about making more and total costs. It will be about a month before we start on them though.

Why not just redrill the Mog flange to the Rockwell pattern? If your using 20" wheels I don't see much use in going to 8-lug based brakes. Are your 416 axles disc or drum?

If I re-drill the mog flange there is no space for brakes. I have drum brake units which need a bunch of work and pieces to work right. I want brake parts that are easy to locate and cheap. Calipers are $125 each with pads and rotors are $56 each. My design will add 3.75" per side to clear the caliper from the portal and the wheel and that is with a wheel conversion as well.

Where can a guy find a set of those 20" double beadlock combat wheels? I would love to have a set to redrill to fit the mog pattern? I have searched but haven't found any leads for them anywhere. Anybody...anybody??

It took me 2 years to find a set of them and they were the only set. There should be more on the market in the next few years though.

Id be interested in purchasing a set of these. Does this mean a 406 lug pattern can be adapted to yota lug pattern?
