G-Mog

Sean, Those axles are either the U 90,110 or 140 axles. They are the modern equivalent of the 406/416 axle with newer technology and better metallurgy. They are quite strong for their weight and I really like them alot. There are tons of updates to these axles including a much easier process for changing the outboard hub seals. No they won't be cheap but the old addage you get what you pay for applies here. I'm wondering about the six lug 20" alu rims on the G. First time I've ever seen anything like that. Would be nice for mall cruising but on the trail, the wheel would catch hell. Maybe not so bad on the G but a heavy Mog would kill those wheels. The overall axle ratios are as follows: U 90 7.12:1 U 110 5.31:1 or 6.52:1 U 140 5.31:1 or 6.52:1 The 5.31:1 is standard where listed above and is pretty high for a Unimog axle. The low gearing in the gearbox more than makes up for this though. I can easily cruise with my Mog (U 140) at 70 mph but I keep it at 62 mph for obvious reasons. The track width is 6'10" with the 405/70R20 tires. If you need any other info, just PM me and I'll be glad to help. Oh yeah, you can see some good shots of the U 140 axles on this page: http://teamunimog.com/gt140.htm -EuroTruck

Hello!
1stly, I like what you have done there. My brother and I have also been wanting to do something similar. And now that we have found the appropriate G-wagon, with some help from someone who has done this, we can begin. The subject is a G280D, 1982. The Unimog's diff available here in Pakistan are of the U406. Are those good enough? We want a bit of an all-rounder--good on road n highways n excellent off-road. We don't plan to keep the same engine...something new with a 5 fwd transmission. Could you tell me how much work we are looking at exactly? Both of us have a good mechanical aptitude but we have never tried anything of this sort before. You reply will be greatly appreciated. Cheerz! |
