Axle ID tips???

I've got a buddy across the pond that is sending a container over here around Dec. He told me that he has seen quite a few of the Mog portals in the j-yards and would be willing to send me a set or 2. What I need to know is how do I go about telling him how to ID between 404's & 416's. Are there any markings, numbers, etc... Is there a difference in widths. Any info, especially pics, would be greatly appreciated.

the 404 are a stamped steel axle housing, i think the 416s are all cast.

404 has a 1 piece housing...the 416's are bolted together on each side of the 3rd member.

401, 411 and early 421 are also 1 piece design´s, but they are narrow and they have some weaker parts.

Thanks for the info guys, keep it coming. Is the WMS to WMS measurement the same for both axles or are the 416s wider? Are they different widths front to rear for the same production housing?

Easy,

The best way to ID them is by looking at the ID tag on the pumpkin. Most axles will still have the tag attached. If there's no tag then the above given advice will have to do.

You could also have your buddy take a few photos and then you could post them here for an ID.

Good luck,

Will the id tag actually say 401, 404, 411, 416, 421, etc.....? Or is there a different set of numbers to id them?
