MOG 406 Axle specs needed

I need to get information on MOG 406 axles.
How do they compair strength wise to a 404?
Do they share any simular parts to the 404 (brakes, hub gears, ujoints)?
Dimensions (WMS to WMS, axle dia and spline, ect)?
Lockers stock?
What are they worth?

Thanks in advance.

They are stronger than 404's. They are allot heavier. They share no signifigant parts with 404 axles. They are roughly 70" wide. 1.76" dia 21 spline axle shafts. 7.something:1 gearing (If they truly are 406 axles).
Air lockers stock.

I have been qouted $2500-$3000 for these axles from dealers within the states.

I woud take 404 axles over these axles if I didn't plan to run VERY LARGE tires. They are extreme overkill for anything under 40" tires. Still overkill with 44's , but that is probably the route that I would go for confidence sake.

Stronger! How much so? I'd say 30-40% stronger but I have never seen MBZ publish any numbers on this. Remember that with this extra strength comes extra weight.

Nope. Everything is bigger and the housings are different. The 406/416/419 axles use straight cut instead of helical cut gears in the hubs. This prevents the lateral forces that seem to be grenading some of the 404 hub housings on the hybrid rigs. The drums and rotors are bigger and your wheel selections will be minimal. You'll have to use a wheel setup similar to what 6x6 Daniel is building for Station or the stock 11x20 rims.

Dimensions (WMS to WMS, axle dia and spline, ect)?
WMS-WMS Drum axle front 1695 mm or 66 3/4"
WMS-WMS Drum axle rear 1671 mm or 65 13/16"

WMS-WMS Disc axle front 1853 mm or 72 15/16"
WMS-WMS Disc axle rear 1829 mm or 72"

Axle diameter and spline count are not given in the technical data book that I have.

Lockers stock?
Yes and you should put a little air pressure to them if at all possible to make sure that they are funtioning properly and that the little .15 cent o-ring is not leaking. If it is leaking, it's a nice long job to disassemble the whole axle to replace that cheap little part.

What are you willing to pay? Without seeing the axles this question is hard to answer. I would expect to pay somewhere around $4,000 for a good used set of 406 axles that have been rebuilt in Germany. If you get them for less, then that's icing on the cake. If you can get them super cheap and rebuild them yourself, then that's not too shabby either.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies. I am only looking at them because they're cheap. I already have a set of 404 on the way, but deals are hard to pass up.

Sounds like these are early axles, would they have the 21 spline also or course spline?

21 spline 1.76" at the splines.

In other words BIG axle shafts.

The axles are extremely beef everywhere. Though they don't look so big anymore when you mount 53" Michelins on them.

In my opinion are the 406 axles not stronger than the 404īs. Some parts are slightly stronger like the R&P and the axle shafts.
But the Pinion bearings have a lot more failure than the 404. The U-joints are the same and the hubs are almost the same strenght. Itīs hard to use disc brakes, so the hubs have to live with lot more heat and the seal will fail. I run the 406 axles under my Jeep and never broke a part. The only problems i had several times, were the pinion bearings and the seals.
