Hey Fred,
More research, ehh? 404 axles don't weigh much more than D60's. I believe the 404 front weighs @ 530 lbs. and the 404 rear weighs @485 lbs. Also, I've heard the hubs in the 404 axles are helical cut and the 406/416 (aka U900/U1300?) are straight cut. Don't quote me on this, Fred. Does anyone else want to confirm/correct the info? Hope this helps out.

wow, i figured the 404 axles weighed a bit more. when i first put my truck on the lift at my old job, I got a kick out of the lift straining to pick up the truck.

My '76 Ford F-350 weighs dead nuts 6000 lbs. Weighed it soon after I bought it at a truck scale outside town. Passing by a truck scale on the way back from picking up my axles it weighed in at 1100 lbs. heavier. I don't know how different the fuel level was between the two stops, but I know neither stop was near full or empty. Water has about the same density and weighs 8 lbs per gallon. Even a difference of 10 gallons would skew the numbers less than 100 lbs. Passengers and extra cargo were the same each scale.

Scale stop #1:
Truck, 2 passengers, extra cargo...6000
TOTAL............................................. 6000

Scale stop #2:
Truck, 2 passengers, extra cargo...6000
Front axle....................................... 530
Rear axle........................................ 485
Pallet under both axles.................. 50
Difference in fuel............................????
TOTAL............................................. 7065+/- fuel

Scales round to the nearest 50 lbs. The scale read 7100 lbs. Someone once told me these weights for front/rear and the stop at the scale was for my own curiosity to confirm their approximate weight. I thought it came out about right. Cheers.
