Tweaking and Peaking is a term for tuning up a stock C-B radio to get more power out of it.

But always remember, before buying a new C-B radio check your antenna, if your antenna is not
tuned properly no amount of C-B wattage will help. buy the best antenna, antenna stud mount and coax
then have the antenna tuned. Then go buy a radio, an inexpensive radio with a properly tuned antenna will
out perform an expensive C-B radio with a poorly tuned antenna.

Is tuning the antenna something that needs to be done by a professional, or can I do it myself?

tuning an antenna can be done by yourself with an SWR meter, you can get an SWR meter from
me, I stock them for about $39.95 or you can usually get an inexpensive SWR meter from a
truckstop or even radio shack. Even some C-B radio's have SWR meters built in the radio, the built
in SWR meter is good for getting your antenna close to being tuned but i suggest you use a
inline SWR meter for a more accurate reading.

also you will find members of 4x4 clubs often have SWR meters floating around. It's a good idea
to have one and you will find your talking range greatly increases with a tuned antenna.

CRAWLIN70

it has been with my experience that all steel hardtop vehicles
like your XJ you should be running a Wilson 1000 roof top kit $63.95 or Wilson
5000 roof top kit $83.95, one hole in the roof is all you need and the roof
becomes a very good ground plane for the antenna, the kit comes with
coax, all connectors and antenna mast. either one of these kits will install
with ease and they tune very easy and stay tuned. If you insist on a ball mount
on the side, start off with a 4' Wilson flex or 4' K40 flex antenna and be prepared
to punch a large hole in the side of your jeep, as for the ball mount antenna's
performance on the side of a cherokee, i will guarantee that they will not work as
good as a Wilson roof top style antenna.

go with the roof top Wilson for your cherokee and you will be very happy with its
performance.

jeeps and buggies that never run a top i like to weld a tab centered up high on the
cage then put the proper stud mount and probably no longer than a Wilson 3' or 4'
tuneable super flex antenna, that should be plenty of ground and plenty of antenna.
You can also tell me what size tubing you have and i can match up a factory bracket
for you.

if you run a top on your jeep, i have brackets that mount to the rear of
the jeep above or behind the tail light that way you do not knock off the antenna
going thru a tight obstacle. also use a 4' Wilson tuneable super flex antenna, with
this style antenna you no longer need the big chrome spring.

So, do you have a how-to on for tuning the antenna?

I also heard mounting an antenna in the center of the HOOD was a good place for SWB jeeps or Buggys... any truth in this?

I've got a Midland International #13-888B (Big), and a cheep-o Uniden (smalles I've seen) both haven't worked well for me, but I know my antanna is crap... What would be the premo setup between those 2 with the proper antanna.... I've got a 4Runner if that helps...

Also how aboot' those split band CB's I think they are called??? I heard there kinda like HAM, but a bit cheeper to get into...

thanks

94YJGuy,

go to my website www.CBradioUSA.com and under FAQ's at the bottom it tells you how to calibrate your SWR.

if you like the way an antenna would look in the center of your
hood on your cj, yes it would work better but most do not like
the way it looks, putting a Wilson 1000 in the middle would work
great but most use about a 4' super flex tuneable antenna on
the rear.

How about a price on a Ranger 2950 with 10 meter! I have a Uniden Grant XL w/ upper and lower SB, do you take radios in on trade?

YotaRunner,

1) I personally do not like midland anything.

2) The Uniden is a good performing inexpensive radio, is it a 510 or 520.

3) On a 4 runner i would use a Wilson 1000 or Wilson 5000 roof top antenna kit with the Uniden radio, tune the antenna and it should work excellent, if your Uniden is a 520 make sure your RF gain knob is at maximum.

(Also how aboot' those split band CB's I think they are called??? I heard there kinda like HAM, but a bit cheeper to get into...)

1) The C-B radio you are thinking of is called a sideband radio 40 AM frequencies which is C-B, 40 upper sideband and 40 lower sideband frequencies.

2) I rarely see anyone using sideband radios on the trails if you are looking for more channels bypass the sideband and get you a Amatuer Radio and an Amatuer Radio License then buy a Galaxy or Ranger radio for your rig, 300 plus channels and with the FCC license you will understand how to use them.

3) If your group or the people you are wanting to talk to is using a specific frequency that you do not have, call me and tell me the frequency range you want and i can lead you to the correct radio.

OH!
thanks for the welcome

I`ll gladly mount an antenna on my hood if it provides better reception, and since my YJ has a soft top, and then no-top it would be kinda difficult to mount on top during winter seasons...

I have a cheap-o radio shack CB right now, but my old 2' FireStick antenna is broke.. so I need a new antenna, and was figuring if I get a good one, and mount it on the hood I should pickup some range..

Thanks

I have some questions as well. Your webiste doesn't have a whole lot on it right now so...

I am looking at running a 3' Firestick off the driver side of my XJ about where the tailight starts. I would rather not use a top mount as the stuff I wheel is pretty tight and it will most likly get ripped off. What are your opnion on this type of mounting?

We have a couple a extreme cherokees that off road with us all the time, and found that if you do some hard core wheelin your jeep your going to rip that antenna off the side of your cherokee. Why decrease the performance of your C-B with a 3' stick when a 63" Wilson 1000 roof top kit (same price) will out perform a side mount antenna. If your concerned about ripping a roof top off i can also put a spring on the Wilson 1000 roof top kit but i feel that it is not needed because i have yet to see a Wilson 1000 ripped off unless it went thru a parking garage.

but if you insist on a mount for the side or rear of your jeep we can use a standard ball mount or mirror style bracket that might be able to be attached above the tail light and put a 3' Wilson flex antenna on it, i will attach what the bracket looks like. when we get into custom applications we just have to try different things.
