Automatic gearbox on 4 cylinder gas engine

Hi All

I am new around here, i don't have a mitsubishi, but a Chinese 4wd from greatwall, yes i am in China .

Well it is a nice machine and i have a 4g69 in it that is going very soon to receive it's supercharger from Alpine. a bit over 200HP and 310nm torque.

I now look for an automatic gearbox swap to replace my 5sp manual.

Did some 4g64 pagero came with automatic gearbox? Any idea where i can find some information's about it.

I have never seen that in china but maybe they were available in japan?
Are this gearbox full hydrau or they need a specific ecu?
What kind of signal the tranny need?
Any idea about the gear ratio?

I was thinking of the 4spd auto installed on the 6g62 (i think, the v6 3.0l), it is widely available here on late pagero's, but i an not sure the bell housing would fit to a 4g64/69?

Well if any one has inputs about auto gearbox on pagero 4 cylinders, i am very interested.

Thanks

I have no idea what the 4g69 is but if is like the 4g64 you first have to figure out if you have the wide or narrow block search to find out the difference. If you have the narrow search a guy named bill hinkle i believe and he has a bellhousing that will adapt the 4g64 to use a toyota mini truck auto.

I'd look around to find out if the 4g69 engine has a wide or narrow bolt pattern, then go from there.

Pajero automatics have a wide bolt pattern on the transmission.

Hi All

How do you make the difference between a wide and narrow bolt pattern?

I saw a 4g64 from a Chinese pajero and the block and bell housing look just the same.

Any specific way of identifying it?

Thanks

ok, i am pretty sure i have the wide bolt patern on it.

Any idea where i can find pictures of the pagero automatic gearbox?

What kind of control is on it, full hydrau or electric?

How good was this gearbox? Anydoy running it?

The transmission is full hydraulic, very reliable and the bellhousings are swappable. KM148 and AW2 are the ones to look for for full hydraulic control. transmissions are the same except the AW2 has a lockup torque converter. If you can source a Pajero automatic it doesn´t matter if its´s a v6 because you can buy a 4 cylinder bellhousing pretty easily.

Figure out if your engine is a 6 or 7 bolt crank, this will determine which flex plate you need. if it´s a 6 bolt you´ll need a flexplate from a Pajero/Montero with a 2.6L engine, if you have a 7 bolt crank you´ll need a flexplate from a 2.4 powered Pajero which you won´t find used because they were only available in japan from what i understand, I ordered mine from Mitsubishi directly. Everything should be a bolt up assuming your engine is a wide block and is compatible with the mitsu 4 cylinder engines of these types.

Hi Sneakyninja

That is great answer you gave me, sounds absolutely what i am looking for , time to get looking for it now.

by any chance, do you have pictures of the pajero they came with? years?

Do you know the gear ratio, axle ratio and transfer case ratio of this pajero, so i can start looking at my regearing

One question, are the AW2 mitsu and AW4 from jeep having the same front end?

Can the bell housing of a 4g64/AW2 bolt onto a AW4?

Those AW4 are widely available down here

But the AW4 is a TCM controlled trans. for 1-4 shifting.

Yes it is but it got it's own controller separated from the engine ECU so it should be workable.

I just don't know what signal does the controller need, throttle position or something similar?

Yes, a separate but needs to work in conjunction with the ECM. They are connected. Sensors include, VSS(sometimes 2) TPS, RPM, trans selector, 4wd selector, and I know I missed something. You need a complete harness setup from the donor vehicle. At least this is my experience and feedback I have gotten from people. There is a company that is making a full auto stand alone unit, not sure the name. IIRC it's $500ish.

Ok, better stick with the V4AW2 then. Even more as apparently it was on most pajero v6 3.0L and those are common down here .

Any idea where to get a flex plate and a bell housing?

Hi all.

Long time i did not update this post.

Supercharger is installed and work great (full boost from idle), i had hard time with the new ECU and various things, the intercooler is still not on but it is already cool. On sandy beach that wasn't fun in low gear before it now takes high gears from start 1, 2 and 3 ...amazing difference. torque is great and i can drive arround town in 4th or th gear at 1200rpm and it goes when i ask for it.

Well, now i am back on hunting for the proper V4AW2, do you guys have any good source? Maybe in Japan or Philipines?

By the way my flywheel has 7 holes, so look like there will be some challenge.

I could machine out the starter ring teeths and weld in place a lazer cut plate as a flez plate?? original flywheel comes for nothing here.

Is there any specific things to look at on the flex plate, or it just need to be ballanced right and fit the torque converter holes?

I swapped a 7 bolt 4G64 onto a AW2, I used the flexplate, spacer (they call it an adapter) and shim from a Pajero with 2.4. you shouldn't need any special or custom parts if your motor is the same configuration as the 4G64.

Interesting.

My problem is finding the parts, flex plate and torque converter will be the issue. Unless i can use the torque converter of a 6g72/74 etc..? Are there much difference between this torque converters?

Maybe a little late to reply but the flex plates on the 2.5 and 2.8 diesel have 7 holes, the 2.8 at least has a torque converter with lock up
