4D55 Questions
Hi Guys, I usually don't post much because I can almost always find the answer to my questions by just searching this site. But now I have a 86 Ranger with a diesel, I got it with a bad timing belt and the carnage that happens when the belt goes bad. I removed the valve cover and found some broken rocker arms and some that didn't break but had about 1/4 lash, so I'm thinking those valves are bent and hanging open.
So, some of the questions I have are were can I get the parts to fix this? Can I up grade to a roller rocker? 4D56 head? should I? I was thinking about new rings bearing and having the injector pump and injectors rebuilt. Are there any up grades or mods to the pump or injectors I should do or have done? Are these blocks a wet liner? - replaceable cylinder sleeves -there are engine kits on ebay with liners so I was wondering I see a lot of Chinese parts for this engine on ePay - I mean eBay, I figured those are a lot resort. The body on this is pretty rusty, so my idea is to buy a clean later model, 2000ish Ranger or S10 and swap in this drive train, any thoughts on this??? I have no problem doing any fabrication work or electrical. Now while I was looking for new parts I found another 4D55 out of a D50 on Craig's List and bought it complete, no valve train damage, the guys said it had 70k on it. but he removed the head because it sat for many years and a couple valves were sticking. So I plan on rebuilding it also. I noticed that this one has a engine oil cooler and the Ranger did not. So on this one what other transmissions will bolt up to it? What kind of options do I have for a transmission? Does anyone have any link to information on these? Any help is appreciated, Thanks And when I start on the transplant I'll post up pictures, I know everyone likes to see some cool pictures. |

I have a 4d56 roller rocker head on mine, as for transmissions i recommend a Aisin AW2 from a early 90's Montero or even better would be the same trans out of a diesel Pajero.

The engine I have a 4D55 needs rocker arms because some of them are broken. I'm not able to find them, except chineses stuff on ebay. But on U.K. ebay site there are plenty of parts for the 4D56 engine. Can I use those roller rockers on a 4D55, will the cam work?
Anybody know anything on these engines? Thanks |

The 4D56 Roller Rockers are a bolt on swap. I ran a set on a 2.3L (4D55) that I used to have in my '84 D50. I got mine from UK Ebay too.
You can install them as-is, on the 4D55 head, same goes for the Cam. The 4D56 parts are considered an upgrade for the 4D55. Actually, the 4D55 and 4D56 share the same engine block, the difference is the rotating assembly (the 56 has a longer stroke), so stuff like the 56 head and 56 Injector Pump (VE41, pre 1991) are also upgrades to the 4D55

The tranny's from 87-88 Mazda B2600 will bolt right up. The tranny's on the 89-93 B2600i will also bolt on if you use the 87-88 B2600 Mazda bellhousing.
