my 88/89 Sas and build
Some of the early pics of the welding/choping got lost when montypics ate it.
But its a 88 frame with waggy 44 and J truck leafs, I'll be installing either a 4g63 or 4g64 motor backed by a auto and bronco dana 20. I'm gonna use a scout II steering box aswell. ![]() D20 bolted to mitsu auto tranny

Well when you are on a tight budget the most cost saving method is to use what is common and over the counter items. The reason I went with the driver's side drop was I wanted to use the Dana 44 high pinion which only came in Ford trucks and they all had the driver's side drop. I also used the Muncie SM420 tranny and since I already had the dana 44 installed the only commonly available transfer case with the driver's side drop was the NP231 which were at the time mostly in Jeeps." I could not just plunk down a lot of $$ for custom parts.

LT are you using a wideblock or narrowblock tranny? I'd figure it hard to find a wideblock genuine 4g63 genuine meaning DOHC and turbo, unless you find one out of a 2.0 auto powered truck. Then even at that it wont have the bottom end squirters only real difference between the 4g63 dohc turbo and g63b sohc carbie that came in the trucks. Tho I do hear you can machine them in there for some dough.

you dont need to be rich, you need to be smart about what and where you buy stuff, as well as the direction you go with each build step.
i like the D300 duals behind the 231, you can also flip that without much problems too. just saying you guys are on a rock crawling website so the idea here is to make a mitsu crawl. toyota pickups came IFS, just that doesnt mean you cant go huge, trust me. looks like the only problem in that guys swap was the speedo no working, not sure if thats a big deal or not (computer use input from the speedo to shift???). if not then it is a great swap. there are a couple rare autos from toyotas that are extremely similar to the jeep autos, and they accept an adapter from MC that allows them to run toyota cases. this sounds like a good route for most of you that are into going slow. unless you want to spend $$$$$ you really are stuck with toyota duals, or jeep duals. of course you can always run a sammy tcase behind a 2wd tranny. curious why the ford D20? i know there are 4:1 kits, did it have something to do with a simple input shaft?

The IFS isnt the limiting factor. But outside of a 3in BL, torsion bar crank, and ball joint spacers if you trust them. Your out of lift. I know one of the AZ crew guys says his next set of tires will be to go with 38s. While one of the Cali guys has 37s. From what I recall both of them have lockers F&R. And out side of the AZ's guys recent bent UCA and idler arm little carnage to the actual suspension.
The speedo problem just makes it difficult to drive daily. I think only the later model 5spd auto (3rd gen) had a complex tranny with a fancy ecu for its self and all that. So outside of a nonworking speedo nothings really wrong with the swap. I'm monstroulsy interested in Nathan's doubler set up. And would like to see another done. 2wd version of these trannys is incredibly rare. I know this b/c I hang out on a forum that would like to see the 6g72/4TT the motor used in 3000gts/stealthsused in a rwd application. The montero sports are the only thing I'm aware of that has a 2wd version of that tranny. Now if you ran the 2.6 4cyl 2wd versions of them are a plenty. But then one would have to realistically make it a trail rig only. Big tires with a lil 4cyl and a doubler would be unrealistic to street. Which not being able to street it makes it a negative for most mtisu owners. I'm starting to feel like a postwhore. :lol: Glad to hear someone with some new views!!! |

the 6g72 came in 87.5-89 caravans and grand voyagers. Weather or not those are manuals or autos I don't know.

With 20r, 22r, 22re power. Its all about axel gearing for the street. Axel and case gearing for crawling. |

I won't be running dual cases i do like them but i'll be fine with just the 3.6:1 low range i could go for the 4:1 or even 4.86:1 in the 20 but for the expedition/crawling trips the 3.6 works for me without going double down cases. Speedo for these gen 1's are cable and another montero guy in cali works for a speedo shop and i have already talked to him and sounded like it was a cake job for him. I think i'll be picking up a shifter for it out of junkyard fwd car, or maybe just get some shifter cables and make some lever shifters or something.
As for the engine it will most likely be a 4g64(wideblock) Non turbo i drive slow i'm the guy that drives under the hiway speed limit I just leave early, anyway back to engines the 64's are more common but i do know where there are wideblock g63's are. As for tires i'm only running 35's they work fine for me 37s are pretty cool i must say but when does the madness stop. hahaha Tranny will be from a gen 1 or early gen 2 montero V6 or 4cyl (bellhousings innerchange) lockup would be nice, was gonna pick one up but it got crushed before i got there. Oh well Its gonna be a pretty slow build I'd like to get started back up on it after the holidays. Thanks for the questions dudes I like answering them maybe it will help you all get your minds going for your projects and mine. |
