My new/old 1987 dodge raider with oil pressure issue
First want to say hello to all and thanks for taking the time to read this.
Well a couple of weeks ago a purchased a 1987 4 banger Dodge Raider just for the sole purpose to turn it into my ice fishing machine. It’s great it can carry all my gear and my kids to my fav spots. I was thinking originally that in the spring I will just sell it and use the money to buy a little boat but after a few weeks with this little raider I am starting to feel that I won’t want to get rid of it at all. But I’m having one little issue with it and it has happened a few times but yesterday it left me stranded about 20 Km’s away from home.!! Once and a while the oil pressure meter shows at 0 and the engine is just pinging loud . usually I just waited few min and restart the truck and drive a few feet and its fine then meter reads good and no pinging . Yesterday ready to go home it happened again but this time I could not get it to kick in , so I had to get my ass towed home . Once the raider was in the drive way I started it up to put in the garage and the meter was reading fine and no pinging . So id like to hear any thoughts on what to check or do next . I was thinking that it was maybe the cold so I parked it outside for a few hours and it was fine still. I took it out again today "same lake" it was fine all day. Thank you Ice Raider |

K-there,
Hey dude! Still looking through the old 4wheelers you sent me! The 2.6L has two timing chains. Topic already discussed on another Mitsu Board. Russell

Even though I have been getting some flack for posting the same question on other boards it was also brought to my attention on another forum that the problem that I’m having with the oil pressure could be caused by a faulty/sticky pressure relieve valve spring in the oil pump . I just picked up the Chilton’s book on the raider and it does mention about this relieve spring. ……mmmmmm?? I’ll be bringing it to a mechanic hopefully soon. Hope this helps someone else in the future!

So the other day i took the Raider out again and it was fine for the first few start ups but then it happend again were I had no oil pressure and engin pinging. But I found out if I drive it fast and far enough to get it to change to 2nd gear the oil pressure comes up again. BTW it is autoM I did this three times with the same result. It was minus -30 yesterday and it does seem to happen when it is very coldout side.
Maybe its just me but it sounding like the {prssure relief spring valve??} in the oil pump is getting stuck in the cold and with more pressue behined it opens then......!!! |
