'89 needs new engine, 6G72 vs 6G74

I have a stock '89 Montero LS 3.0L V6. I would like to know if the 6G74 3.5L V6 from a '94 Montero SR is interchangeable with little or no mounting mods. Any pro's or con's or should I just stick to getting a 3.0L?

IIRC....NO.

i think you will need to wsap transmssion and all electrics too.
sounds like a hassle to do. probably better to get the 94 sr as ur main rig.

That would be pretty cool to drop the 1995 3.5 and trans into a 1989 short based montero.

Thanks. Unfortunately the '94 is in the junk yard. I could get the trans and wire harness, but that's a bigger job than I was wanting to get into. My '89 has 250k on it and was looking for a good eng rebuild candidate.

Actually I dont agree. The 3.5 will bolt to the the 3.0 genI auto trans. The mounts will not interchange and require a little modding.

There are two known swaps on the other forum having done this. You'll need complete engine with wiring harness. The flex plate from the old engine..More details over there

If your serious about it there are two threads documenting it over on the wire.

Yea, no swap is going to be easy, but it does work. Just try to picture it with a red and black color scheme then it will be worth it.

The AZ crew did one with a 4 Cyl auto, swapping a V6 bellhousing on the auto trans. Swapping that engine into a 6 Cyl model would be a lot easier since you would not need to swap bell housings and you could use the stock fuel pump set-up. You would probably want to upgade to the 3000GT fuel pump though, that should be a direct swap.

3.5 DOHC into a 3.0 powered truck = weekend project

The one we did took a few weekends but we had to do a bunch of extra junk because it was a 4cyl truck originally

Basically a bolt in swap for you man, wiring is kind of a pain since the harness is so huge and you have to pull the dash but itīs worth it. I will warn you the truck will be SCARY fast.

Oh and the motor mount pads are in the correct place on your frame but i forgot if you need to use the 3.0 isolators or the 3.5 isolators but itīs so easy to figure out i didnīt feel it necessary to remember

Thanks for the info guys. I'm really looking forward to this project. I deploy this summer but I want to get a good engine rebuild candidate when I get back. I read on another thread of a rear end swap with a '96 into an '89 to get the rear disk brakes and larger springs. Any other worth while swaps I'd love to hear about. I hate to see good parts go to the car crusher.

That disc brake rear-end swap is fully worth it. Running 35's, that disc brake rear let's you stop on a dime and gives you change back.

I'm pulling this back up to the top because I have a few questions.
I found a 95 SR, everything is good but the motor. The 3.5 motors are hens' teeth around here (TX panhandle). The closest I have found is 6 hrs. away and 2k. I just want it back on the road for now, and over the winter I will try to find a cheaper 3.5.(or a diesel)

What will bolt in to this without major modifications? This is TX so we don't have crap about emissions or different year model engine swaps. I am still trying to sort through the 4x4wire threads.

I am also looking for any chart that shows what models came with these motors. Some of the Diamantes did but apparently dont fit in a Montero. Totally different bolt pattern and oil filter bracket location. Kia minivans had them for a while and I know Hyundai used them in Amanti. Chryslers used a lot of the 3.2 and earlier motors.

Any help?

You are pretty much looking at finding a montero motor and thatīs it, you could pretty much use any of the 24v engines to get you buy with a little work untill you find a good 3.5 DOHC or like you said diesel. 4M40 swaps in, there is a really good write up on 4x4wire diesel tech.

Thanks.

New here and want to put 3.5l 6G74 from 95 SR with Megasquirt into my 2.6l 4cyl 5spd 88 Raider. Will my transmission bolt up or do I need the trans from the SR Montero, both are wide aren't they, any other problems. What are the above "other" forums? Just don't see any reason to reinvent the wheel if someone has done this. This Raider is not going to be for serious OR use.

Your going to have to use the montero SR transmission. Search 4x4wire forums and outerlimits 4x4 forums for more information.

motor 3.0

the 3.5 is not only a diff. swap the engine is less reliable than the 3.0 find one then keep it cool. parts train has them for 1200 plus core.
