montero surge problem

ok guys i need a little help before i pull my hair out. i have a 93 montero with the 3.0l v-6. it starts and idles fine but when getting on the throttle from a stop or pulling a hill it has a real bad surge. it pulls then dies off then pulls then dies off with about a 3 second on off time line. i pulled the throttle body and intake and cleaned them and pulled the MAF and cleaned it with MAF cleaner but still the same. it doesnt throw any codes and no CEL. leavin my house headed to town is a big long hill and it really strugles to get up it without full throttle and it kicking down into first. even when its revving to the moon it still surges. back in the day i had a 75 chev pickup and when the fuel pump was dying out it acted the same but that was a mech. fuel pump and the fuel was only just dribbling out. so i am at a loss as to where to check next.... any help is much appreciated. thanx benv

Geeez...that doesn't sound good.

but i do not know about the auto. does it have a kick down cable or something? You have checked the trans fluid?
Maybe the Trans is crapping out.

how fresh is the engine? Heads gaskets leaking?

maybe it is electrical and the distrubutor or ign coil or ign module is started to crap out?

i have a manual so i am not much help.

its def. something with the engine. the tranny is fairly fresh and it has been doing it for a while now. even after a new engine it still does it. still using the old injection and electrical from the original engine though. full tune up. set tiiming a few times just to see if that would do anything. i wonder if it is an ignition advance issue? i am not real up to date with fuel inj. but if it was an carb. motor i could do it with my eyes shut.

ok.....hmmmmm
from previous problems on my Montero ( 3.0 manual 1989 )
I had a ign module go bad. the rig would just die whenever it wanted to until it finally died for good.
My son's rig ( 3.0 manual 1989 ) had a bad coil. The vehicle would be hard to start when cold. It got worse and worse until one morning it would not start at all anymore.
After i replaced the ign module on my rig, it started cutting out again even more random than before. I replaced the Distibutor and that solved that problem.

I have extra coils , modules and a distributor from the junkyard now. i have tested all of them on my rig and my son's so they are good parts.
i also have extra ecu's , throttle bodies , extc...

we have 5 pick n pull junkyards around here and got the parts for super cheap. The dist. was only 39.99.

well maybe you can do the same. it sucks to guess at this shit but sometimes it is all you can do. i have the shop manual and it is pretty vague for troubleshooting sometimes.

i looked at it a bit more today and i cant really see anything visual that is wrong with anything. all vac. lines are replaced and all electrical connections have been cleaned. idles perfect but it still has the on off surge when accelerating and pulling a hill. almost like the dreaded surging idles that a lot of toyotas and hondas get but it only does it as the rpms climb.
