Looks like a ton of fun and work to stay focused. What's the specs on the KTM? You run an auto clutch for that terrain?

I was about to drop down this one canyon but I saw two dudes on Yamaha's plugging the trail so I opted out.

Those trails do take a lot of focus. I am on a 2008 KTM 450xcr-w with a rekluse pro clutch. I've only ridden this bike 4-5 times so far and I must say I like the rekluse. It works just like a normal clutch, I can still 'feather' the clutch lever in tight situations to keep the tire hooking up, and it is easy to come to a stop and not stall the bike or have to hold the clutch lever in. Very hard to stall the bike with this clutch. Only downside I can see is you can't bump-start the bike (assuming I lost the ability to kickstart/e-start the bike) and the bike needs to be parked on level ground or it will tend to roll.

You didn't stop and play on any rocks?

I can remember every single time I've played on rocks with my 2t, because inevitably I crush a pipe. However, it's always fun to poke around and do some impromptu rock crawling when you have shit like that around.

No, but the Boulder's OHV has got some great trails also. Payson also has an area called 'The Boulders' but it is mostly quad trails or super tight mtb trails that are not fun on a moto.

Did our own rock crawling on the Potts Mtn Jeep Trail. This is actually a NFS road so tags are a must.

Rode the Potts Mtn Jeep trail again.

Took some video. It needs some editing which I don't have the software to do at this point.

The ledge on a dirt bike.

Mayhem at the bypass (I need to figure out how to flip part of this). Gabe's running commentary is pretty good.

Stand up on your pegs, use your clutch more, keep your speed up a little bit and those trails will become super easy and fun once you learn to ride them.

Also, it looks like most of you guys are at the same skill level. Find a couple guys to ride with that are better than you and push you to try harder obstacles and ride more aggressively. You will be very surprised what you can do once you see someone do it in person. For example, in that first video, you could have ridden off that sheer drop where the log is and landed to flat no problem. 2nd gear, 10 mph, blip the throttle right as you go off the edge. Really cool feeling the first time you do something like that.

Looks like fun stuff on 2 or 4 wheels! The soil and rock look so different from the desert I ride in AZ. I'd also like to try the Rubicon Trail on a moto one day (lots of granite slabs and boulders to play on).

In regards to standing or sitting, it is all personal preference. Standing sure helps on the downhills or jumps/ledges but some of the fastest guys i've ridden with sit down 90% of the time and just get off the seat only when necessary. I'd say gearing would help a ton on a trail like the videos you posted. Lower gears would help traction and less strain on the clutch.
(I seem to like the 14/53 or 13/52 combo for slow technical rock trails FWIW).

I recently went to Moab, UT and explored some fun stuff around there. Traction on the sandstone rock is incredible. I used an old worn out rear tire and it worked great:

Plus that's way steeper than it looks.

Rubicon has very little play durring the ride. It is a great challenge and experience but the slabs are well into the trail, I was beat up by then.
Cougar Buttes has a lot of fun granite to play on. If you are out for KOH week we can go over there and play.
Moab is a dream of mine.

I did Rubicon in a Jeep over two days and had a lot of fun, but I could see how the trail would wear you down on a bike.

I've ridden around Cougar, that is good stuff out there. I'll be at KOH for the week and plan to work one of the check stations for KOM. Should be a lot more moto participants for 2013.

in Moab for warm ups i always do a loop:
Poison Spider, Golden Spike, Rusty Nail, Goldbar Rim, Golden spike, Poison Spider.

Have rode Pritchett Canyon up and down several times. Pretty much every truck trail in Moab. (Except Coyote Canyon, Upper Helldorado, etc)

But mostly we head out and do some insane singletrack trails with lots of rock. Well worth it to know the locals 'in the know'.

i have many videos of me on my ktm 950SER on some Moab trails. Mainly i ride a Berg 450.

I did Tahoe to Loon and back this summer. My arms were destroyed before getting back to Buck Island (bent clutch lever didn't help). If I was going to do it again I would make sure I had the following.Bike is a '08 CRF450R.
- 1.6 or 1.8 radiator cap (done) Stock is 1.1, bike ran hot and boiled over.
- Overflow tank (done) Bike saw lots of stream water refills.
- Take some compression out. Bike was more setup for desert / track and is a little stiff for consistent basket ball sized rocks.
- 18" wheel w/trials tire (done) Cracked the stock 19" on the trail.
- Flywheel weight (done 13oz)
- Even lower gearing. Had 13-50 at the time and now run 12-48. Would probably go all the way down to 12-50 for the con, would be a lot easier on the clutch.
- Dog House would recommend knee braces he twisted his left in big sluice.
I would set aside around 4hrs of trail time each way. You can run the highway back around but it only saves ~1/2 hr.

I will be at JV week of KOH from Saturday thru Sunday and will be looking for some people to ride with. We should plan some rides.
I will also be out at Cougar Buttes from just after Christmas through New Years if anyone wants to come out and ride. I want to get a game of HORSE going on the rocks around camp.

Went out 'rock crawling' last weekend. The master-link clip failed about 10 miles into a 40 mile ride. I was able to find the bent link/plate and managed to put the chain back together, then I used safety-wire on each of the pins where the 'c-clip' would slide on. Surprisingly it held great and I was able to finish the ride.
(i normally carry a spare link but I had given it to a buddy and never replaced my tool kit). My buddy Dave was on a new 12' KTM 300 xc-w. The 6-speed wide ratio transmission on his bike easliy kept up with my 450 xcr-w. Very impressed w/his bike, and it is like 20lbs lighter than mine.
