Basic motorcycle wiring

I am sure I could have found answers on other forums but I didnt care to join others to ask questions. My googlefu is lacking if this has been covered in this forum before. Im in the final stages of finishing my scooter. I have been researching the easiest way to wire this bike.

I am running bare minimum to pass Pa in inspection. I will be running:

Headlight
Taillight
Turns
Horn
Ignition
Starter

I was hoping to get some others ideas on the cleanest install regarding fuse blocks and relays. I have looked all over the net trying to find exactly what I need but cant come up with it.

Im thinking i will just need all circuits switched hot with a relay and then a second turn relay wired before a three position switch.

These are two of the options Im looking at:

http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/Pr...fuseboxes.html

http://www.fuzeblocks.com/

I have a good unstanding of wiring this thing. I guess I looking for some other ideas from people who have wired a bike from scratch.

Couple of pics if you care to see what Im working on

You may want to go to a web site like Baja Designs that sells to the dirt bike market. They may have a simple diagram of their lighting and turn kits.

All are based on the basic handle bar left hand switch. These can be bought on ebay....but I have never seen one of them on a chopper so?????

Seems to me that you will only have one relay (starter)
One fused wire to the headlight/tailight portion of the left-hand-switch. The switch will separate high and low beam.
One fused wire for the horn/brake light through a foot switch or ??? (Some left hand switches ground the horn?)(Some states require front brake light actuation)
One fused wire with a electronic flasher ($10) to the turn signal portion of the left-hand-switch. Wires out to the signals.
One ground wire going to the/a handlebar kill button.

Horn and brake light will not be key switched. Tail and headlight may not be key switched. Your engine electrics needs to be key switched and probably in-line fused.

Usually the starter relay and main fuse to the key reside near the battery.

I have never seen clean MC wireing as it has to get tucked up into some pretty tight spaces. But, I am not a street guy, so maybe there is some trick stuff for you.

A 12v cigar lighter socket is always handy and run directly from the battery with a 15amp fuse.

Connections to the + of the battery will be from the Alternator/regulator. starter, key switch.

This is a start.........Find a place for the parts first. The wireing will sort itself out as you think out the systems.

That bike looks like it will be alot of fun to ride...... In a straight line

Wiring is pretty simple. battery fuseblock off a relay and then start running wires. Keep it simple and run it thru the frame if you can.

Thanks for the response Bower. I will be using banjo bolt switches for both front and rear brakes. I think i am going to buy the fuzeblock, its small and has the option of both switched and always hot circuits. I still need to find a turn flasher relay that I can mount in the wiring box.

I plan on using a three way switch instead of a key. One position would power the relay for all hot switched circuits. One would be all off and the third will be a engine kill.

Frames off for powdercoat now hopefully I will get to ride this thing before winter. I just started working on it again this summer after a five year sebatical. I bought the frame in way back in 04.

Today I stopped at a local bike builders shop to ask him what he recommends for bike wiring. He showed me one of Ultimas complete wiring harnesses.

http://www.ultimaproducts.com/harness.htm

With this harness everything electrical is taken care of. All relays and fused circuits are stubbed out of the box ready to be wired. Pretty slick setup and should be an easy install.

I tried to save the wiring diagram from the pdf file to post it here but I have no idea how to do it.

I haven't wired a bike from scratch, but I traced out all my wiring for a 76 kz 750. I don't know if it'll help you or not, but if you want it pm me and I'll post links to the screen shots.

I purchased the ultima kit I linked above. Looks like a very solid piece. The newer version has the harness broke into 4 plugs on the box.

Everything is straight forward and should wire fairly quickly. I'm going to order a Dyna-s iggy and coil to replace the stock ignition module and cam pickup. Ill throw a few picks on here when I start to wire this thing.

I purchased the Ultima wiring harness, it seems to be a soild piece. I made a wiring plate to mount the fuse/relay box and my ignition module.

Should be pulling wires fairly soon.

I finished my bars and started pulling the wires to their homes.

I got all wires pulled through backbone. I left the shrinkwrap off to see how easily it pulled. I had no issue pulling them through so i believe Im going to pull them back and shrinkwrap the wires.

I finally got this pig wired. I have a one switch to power all and one turn switch. With the diagram sent from Ultima all wiring was correct and I didn't have to chase any gremlins.

The second pic is how the bike sits now. I only need to measure for my brake and throttle lines and it will be ready to boogy.
