maxxed heart rate, oxygen depraved, at 30mph and then faster when going down a grade elbow to eblow is the scariest thing i have ever done. the slightest twitch by any of the 20 riders in front or to the side of you will be the end of you for a while

I go to Moab often. I go crawln' one day, then I bike the next day. The trails I do in my jeep are the same ones I do on my, one wheel drive, mountain bike. I've even passed rigs on obsticals because they're taking to long.

Many road racing stuff especially the Tour is impressive but it's their fitness and mental levels. Subsets of mtn biking like DH, FR events like the RB Rampage, DJ & Park, and Street and Trials you've got to have some bike control and handling mixed in there as well.

I'm sure many of you have seen this vid how Danny Hart makes a sketchy and slick ass DH course look like a ride in the park:

Danny Hart is certainly not a fat fuck that just hucks it - hell I'd like to see any Tour rider just get down that course. I'd make a bet Danny could get a stage or 2 done pretty respectively on the Tour.

Yeah... and? You do not think that the top DH guys are training and doing multi-hour rides? Both on road and in dirt.

Yes, you would be correct in saying that the Tour is the most grueling event in modern sports. But DH racing, besides needing fitness you need a hell of a lot of skill. Many roadies I see can't even track stand. Never mind bunnyhop a log.

I ride a DH bike, while I'm not the best at it, a day of riding / jumping / dropping sure kicks my ass.

I rode up and down the spiral highway in lewiston, ID. Corners are sharp enough and you go fast enough to bottom out front and real suspension on my cannondale.

I will admit that Levi was riding that singletrack very well and at speed. Impressive. I can see how he won the Leadville - he's got Tour legs and lungs and has ability to ride singletrack. But he does on to say: "I don't think I've ever suffered that much". So mountain biking is for pussies, eh?

Curious, what are all the disciplines that most road riders aka "cyclists" do?

I never said Danny Hart could win a stage at the Tour. And don't think he could podium at Leadville. I am taking a guess that he could finish both of them with a pretty respectable time. What I am saying is making it down that course in those condition that Danny Hart did is far beyond the bike handling skill of most roadies. Hell to be honest it's far beyond the skill of most mtn bikers.

Whatever - I'm a fat fuck and a pussy but I have a shitload of fun riding my bike.

Cadel Evans won the tour last year. He was mountain bike world cup champion in the late 90's. He got skills on a MTB before he went to the skinny tire world. Nobody can say what Danny Hart can do later... He
Is one of the few DH guys the is training with a power meter. He is taking his training to to next level. Things that few roadie racers do.

This is just turning into a Cardio VS. Skill debate. I've been pretty into downhill the last few years and fitness is a big part out. Almost every serious DH racer trains with a roadbike, xc bike , etc.. They may not be able to win a stage at the tour but they might be able to out sprint a good number of roadies.
