Exhaust routing

Curious to get everyone's opinions on how they like to route their headers and exhaust. I am getting ready to yank out my 351M and put in a 460 into my 78 Bronco. I currently have fenderwell exit headers, and the tires rub. I could go back to fenderwell exits and use L&L headers, but I would rather not. I thought about zoomies from Schoenfeld, but I am not sure if I would like the noise. I also thought about getting some shorty headers and running the exhaust out the fenders (seen where some trucks in Minnesota are doing this).

I know lots of competitive mud racers are running zoomies through the hood, but what about the non-competitive guys? If there is anyone running zoomies through the hood on a regular bog truck, does that seem to be the way to go, or would you change over to a different setup after running zoomies?

Also, Tie6044 (Road Rage truck from MN), I have seen your truck at Howie's. Great truck by the way. As I listed above, I am also entertaining the idea of routing the exhaust through the fender, similar to how you have yours. Did you use shorty headers with just some additional exhaust piping? Also, how do you like it?

Any and all input is appreciated!

Thanks
Adam

lots of bog trucks do it. i've had friends do it. seems to work fine for them.

personally, i hate them.... i think they're ugly, they sound bad, and make it a pain in the nut to open the hood.

Hey Adam, ya I love the way mine are, they stay clean and they don't go straight up through the hood. My original plan was to put a regular set of headers on upside-down but the angle wasn't right so I tried a set of shorties and they hit one of my shock towers so I just ordered up a weld-up kit and had a guy weld them up. They look like a regular set of headers just upside-down, then I added a little more pipe and a 90 degree elbow and ran them out the fender. Just have to be careful working on the motor while it's hot!

Zoomies are a terrible choice for a naturally aspirated engine. Go with some truck pull headers if you want them through the hood.

I think a lot of people refer to truck pull headers as "zoomies"

Thanks for the input guys. Yeah by "zoomies" I am referring the headers that go 4-into-1 through the hood.

I am starting to think I would like to go through the fenders. I should have probably specified, but the truck has a dual-triangulated 4-link f/r. This rules out chassis-exit headers. I don't want to buy expensive L&L's fenderwell exits only to have the 44's tear them off.

I talked to Schoenfeld, and they want roughly $330 for a set of pull headers (sorry for misrepresenting them!), and they said they come with pretty cheesy black paint that is mostly flaked off when they would get to my door. They said it would be another $225 to get them ceramic coated, and then shipped.

It just seems that I could come up with a set of shorty headers and bends for cheaper than either Schoenfeld or L&L's options.

I have tons of room under hood (gotta love 70's Fords!), and should be able to run shorties flipped over, and then run a 90 degree bend out of the fender.

Thanks for the input once again, and if anyone has any more opinions, please post them up!

you will give up flow with off the shelf shorties.
off the shelf headers have the stock chassis to deal with as first priority, so they have nasty sharp turns right at the port
a real race header will have a more performance design
stainless is the only real way to go for headers, but $$$

We've always referred to zoomies as the ones that don't collect into 1.

if you go with these or any truck pull headers you will need a off set on them im pretty sure on my chevy i had to take the vacum assist off my brakes and just run manual brakes

Guys, does anyone have much experience with Schoenfelds or any other brand of truck pull headers. It would be pretty sweet to just mount a set and run them through the hood. Then I could completely seal off the inner fenderwells. I acknowledge the fact that I would lose the brake booster, and that would kind of suck.

The truck is already open-header, so I am not thinking the sound would be all that bad.

If anyone has any experiences with Schoenfelds or other makers of pull truck headers, please post up!

As always, any info or input is appreciated!
Adam

they are a good set of headers, i know of a few guys running them on bbf and bbc's, nothin bad to say about them other than maybe the price.

I wouldn't worry about loosing the brake booster, as the brakes get so packed with mud and grime they don't work properly anyway.

Look into these guys they make offset headers so you can keep the brake booster. Forgive my lack of knowledge but why are zoomies a bad idea on na engines? Is it because you loose your exhaust scavenge effect?

Purecountry, I may have missed it, but it looked like you were recommending a company or manufacturer, but there is no name or link. Would you mind posting up, as I am curious to see who it was.

I was also looking at Power Pro Products, who mostly seem to work with pulling equipment and higher-class mud racing. They sell a set of truck-pull headers for a little less than Schoenfeld, but I need to call them this week and see if they come with an offset, and what coating they come with.

Thanks for the info.
Adam

I ordered some ERO vinyl this morning, I'll have to show it to you when I get it. $20 ea in our font of choice!

Anyway, I was sitting here watching the AZ/Philly game and had a thought. What about running shorties backwards and just dumping the exhaust right in front of the front axle? Would that work, I haven't seen under the hood of that thing in a while....

I ran a set of Schoenfeld truck pull headers on my Toyota and I thought they were the best of mud bogging. They were built nice and fitted pretty good, other than one bolt hole on each side had to be left out because it would thread into the head, but other than that nice headers. Plus they sounded the best than other headers I had.

It may be interesting to generate a common definition. My definition of "zoomies" is a combination of both of yours: Straight pipes off the heads through the hood...one pipe straight up for each cylinder. Bonus is that they are easy to make yourself, downside as Tex mentioned is that you need to have the motor in the first place to benefit from them. Not like I see having a big motor as a downside

I was gonna reccomend these guys, they have offset headers just for trucks.
http://www.decheaders.com/shop/index...ex&cPath=64_66

And Im still wondering why indvidual pipe headers with out a collector don't do well on n/a applications? Is it the vacum effect of drawing out the other gases?
