Holley Dominator Air plenum / intake / snorkel

I am looking at options to make my snorkel set up into the cab for my dominator carb. I found two, one by spectre and one by extreme velocity, one going for 300 and the other 350. Little pricey if you ask me.

I know I can fab something up, but just looking for ideas.

I would like a single inlet like the extreme, because I am going to run it to where the heater core used to be. If I have to do two hookups it will be a pita and look like a maze of tubing to route the one side back over. From some simple calculations the square area of all venturies of the carburetor combined is less than the square area of a 4" tube. I contacted k&n and they make a 4" cone filter that flows over 1200 cfm.

I was thinking of making it out of sheet steel and make a cylinder to fit the carb and weld on a 4" bung for the hose, or attempt to make it out of fiberglass which I have no experience with. I just think that the prices they sell these for is rediculous.

here is the spectre

here is the extreme velocity

i have a friend who runs the velocity on a regular 4150 carb. he likes it.

a different friend, this time with a 4500 carb... took the top and bottom lids of an air cleaner and wrapped it around with sheet metal, like where the air cleaner rides. welded it up and put some hoses in the side that route into the cab.... seems to work just fine.

I'm interested too. Getting ready to do the same thing and I am worried about flow. I did some calcs b/c I wanted to run about 3-4ft of hose straight off an air cleaner spacer and it didn't look good. My hose would need to be 8" dia vs the std. 5-1/8" carb neck size regardless of what filter I put on it. Any thoughts?

Ya that would be a way to go, but I have no air cleaner for the dominator. Maybe I could pick something up on ebay for cheap.

Why do you need a 8" hose mudslut? Just curious.

What I was trying to say was, it's not the diameter of my hose so much as the distance it has to travel that is restricting airflow. That distance creates drag and reduces the flow. Basically imagine some 3" exhaust out a car for an exaggerated example. It may flow good at 6ft long, but not at 100ft. Another example: take any engine and feel around the air cleaner(in my case 14" round) when it idles and you shouldn't feel much vacuum because it is flowing good, but take a 5 1/8" hose bolt it to the carb and keep extending it, as you do, a stronger and stronger vacuum will be created due the the drag added by the longer hose. You flow is going bye, bye unless you increase the diameter of the hose, and in my case it was about 50% of what the carb neck was for 3-4ft or 8" hose. Make any sense?

Makes me wonder how much one of those "pre-made" safari jeep snorkles restricts flow? Based on the calcs I was doing even the lil 4.0 is going to be choked after running out the fender and up the side of the windshield for size it looks like they give you. (don't know exact size, but have seen them up close a 100 times)

I see what you are saying now. I didn't take drag into account. I cut out the area where the heater core used to be so I have approximately 15" by 15" plate that I am going to attach there. So I may be better off going with two hoses and filters when I make the carb adapter just have them come off the same side and loop into the firewall. Or say go 6" and neck down at the filter.

that extreme velocity has a 6" opening and the spectre has two 4"

I'm looking for a intake plenum too.

I'll be running a backhoe or reach forklift airfilter box that with connect to that and I'll have a HMMWV intake cap in the passenger corner of my hood like an H1.

I was also considering using the base of a steel air cleaner and making something out of sheetmetal to sit on my Holley 750.

You could run one of those old school air cleaners with the ram air tubes coming out of it like they had on a few cars in th 70's.

Here's a pic of what I'm talking about, but this one appears to be "new school"...either way you get the idea. I can't remember what vehicles had them, but I'm sure people give them away.

Maybe straight in (if you have the hood clearance). I used 4" PVC
for a mild 460 build. I think it would flow better than something that
has to turn 90 degrees quickly into the carb, like the adapters that
were shown.

Filter "housing" is 6" PVC tube with 4-6" rubber adapters on each end.

Here is mine for my holley 750, I will probably make something similar just with a bung for running a pipe off of it for the dominator.

Nice, that design goes back several decades but you still don't see them that often

Really, its easy enough to do yourself with some sheetmetal. The thing to remember is that those "accordion" style intake tubes reduce cfm and some large diameter bent pipe is a better option.....although thats a bit harder to accomplish for us home fabricators.

If on the cheap, Pick up an air cleaner from a 6.9-7.3 IDI diesel.

Works great.

Or if you want to get fancy? Pick up a silicone boot and some aluminum pipe from a old LTL 9000 air to air unit.

Well I picked up some materials today so we will see what comes of it. I am going to attemp some fiberglass just to try / do something different. If all else fails I can still weld.

I used 5" truck exhaust 90's and the clamps and built a plenum from 18 gauge. used a 5" hole saw to cut out the carb hole. I'm running 2-425 impcos on a single 850 base(adapter)

So here we go. Remember this is my first time messing with fiberglass, so you glass gooroos.

Start of here are the materials to start with

Cleared out the center for the vents, and smashed down on it to make an outline for the od of the carb which is 7-1/4

Shaved it close to the od with the sawzall blade.

Smoothed of the edges and final trim with a sure form.

The final design. Held it all together with toothpicks and shaved is smooth. This will be the inside of the "plenum".

Wraped in aluminum to save the form and for "easy" removal from the glass.

wraped in glass. Probably 7-9 layers or so.

Cleaned up with the ends cut off. And the aluminum out.

Sanded down and some body filler to smooth it all out.

And a coat of shine.

So in the end would I do it all again this way. Hell yes I would. Although fiberglass sucks, and bondo too. I think that it looks good. Is it heavier than some sheet steel, ya probably. Is it what I wanted, ya. Did I learn a lot, ya. Will I make some changes, next time. So all in all I am happy. Out the door for about 70 bucks.

Oh almost forgot, how does it fit? Nice. Good and flat, and have to push it down over the lip for a tight fit. A gasket and cinch it down will be mud free.

Hey Jenks, what's holdin' it tight to the carb?

I'm gonna have this come up through the corner of my hood similar to a HMMWV.
