Who has a sm465 tranny
How do you like it? And how does it perform in the mud. I've got one and debating on whether to use it or not. I've heard it was a slow shifting tranny with a big gear ratio spread and may not be the best choice in the mud. Any help or opinions needed. Thanks

you for sure ant gonna speed shift it but it is tuff as hell. iIhad one in a 4door crew cab chevy on rockwells for bout five years and only tore the reverse gear out one. Took it out to put an auto in and have hated it ever since. Just my 2 cents

Tough as nails thats for sure. The adapter between the tranny and t-case is the weaklink.
Great for crawling and trails but man it is really tough to find a gear that works perfect in the mud and sand. And yeah, it shifts like a tractor. That being said, 1rst gear (not granny) in high seemed to work great.

I like them
![]() The thing to remember is that you can get away without axle gearss because of the bull low, and they will take nearly everything you can throw at them.

Great for trails and what not but hated it in the mud. Couldnt find a sweet spot.Big power and big tires tear em up just like everything else. Ive snapped one 10 spline and two 32 spline outputs. Maybe because of a big block and to much commitment..just my opinion tho. Cheap and easy to work on.

does fine, but tend to loose a little momentum from gear to gear in a long stretch of muck, i would start in 2nd dump it and go, shift to third keep it at 4-5000rpm and keep the tires clean, and hope for the best. like said above NO SPEED SHIFTING. i never did a timed run or anything just out playing in my pit mostly.....

I wish reverse was numerically higher ratio. Hard to get any wheelspeed out of it esp. in low range
Almost think a HD 3 speed would be better sometimes I do love the strength and the no-overheat, that's a huge plus

My best friend has a 1979 Chevy 3500 DRW w/ a dump bed on it. He's got a 454 BB w/ Cam, heads, headers. running to a SM465 to a 2 speed transfercase to 4.56 gears on 35" tires. The truck is just a work truck but runs great with the granny gear, it can just lope a load of logs up a hill in mud without issue. As mentioned it's bullet proof and you can't overheat it.

Running one in a mild mud truck. Can't speed shift to save your life. Tough as they say. 1st (granny low) is nice. I wheel in 4hi 2nd gear. No overheat worries and bulletprooof-ness is worth it all to me. I only wheel it in the mud anyways, so I pick a gear and run it til the fuel's gone!

I drove mine in mud boggs for years, speed shifting it tho mine got jammed up and had to be rebuilt, too many beatings i guess with a medium built small block. Its tough tho paired with a 205 its unstoppable....

I've ALWAYS ran a 465 in the mud. I loved it except i got a bunch of mud shoved up in my clutch and when i tried to push it in i bent something. Never could figure that out so i pulled it.
Now i built an auto to try out. I'm gonna regret it though I think |

I ran one with tons and 456 gears,205 case and a mild sbc.It was the best tranny for the mud I ever used.I had 44s on it also, the gear combo that worked for me was ,205 in low and trans in first, not granny. And mash the gas,I never shifted.I dont know why the fawk anyone would try to shift gears through a mud pit.You find the right gearing that allows you to control engine rpm and tire speed ,floorboard that fawker till it wont go no more..
..thats how I played in the mud.

I have to start out in 2nd and stand on it then to 3rd, i cant do 1st since i have to shift too soon. I have 465/205 tons with 456s and 39s. But also thats with the t-case in high...the wheel speed helps, I can usually use 2nd and go up to 5500 and shift to 3rd and keep the rpms at 5000 or so until its thick then back to 2nd....usually does real well.....maybe with a stocker or close to stock 350 id use low in the t-case. Now my 465 has the usual L-1-2-3.... the first 2 just make rpms...( my 350 is a lil potent tho 453 dynoed hp)

They are tough and reliable I have been abusing mine with
580hp and 611ft/lb's. They are far from a cadilac but they will get you home.

Like everyone said. Hard to shift fast but bulletproof. I liked mine, granny first was good for driving around tight spots and not having to mess with the clutch, pick a higher gear for the mud. I'm running a C6 in my build now, might someday put a 465 in it.

I'm running a sm465 behind a 383 stroker in a 77 short bed chevy. 1 tons with 4:56 gears and 46'' Michelins. Really tuff!!!!. I've destroyed two clutches (gear droppin), but never hurt the trans. Make sure you have the dust shield on or it will pack the clutch with mud, been there, done that. Long as you're just playin and not racin, the sm465 is great
