chevy auto people
what are you running in your mud truck?? I have a 350 turbo/205 in my truck now but hate autos. Since it's already set up for one i wanna just keep it instead of changing it over to manual like i normally would do. I have 2 465/205's.
Anyways the tranny needs re-built but idk if i should just re-build the 350 or buy a 400 with the same spline output as the 350 to mate to my 205 and build that. If you run the 350 what did you guys have done?? I know i'm gonna need a stall but have never built a automatic before for this. The truck:'80 Chevy shortbed 410c.i sbc looking to get around 400-425hp 6"lift and 35-37's |

if you hate your auto that bad then just go ahead and swap the 465 in. sounds like a no brainer. the 465 can handle some power

Most guys I know are happy with their TH350's. That's what I run.

You shouldn't have any troubles with that 350 with what you are running. Get a good rebuilt kit, and I like to run the B&M transpack which turns it into a manual valve body with very firm shifts, holds any gear at any rpm and will down shift likewise. Quicker than you will ever shift that manual.

TH350= aluminum case lugs wear out, TH400s are designed better and stronger.
TH350/NP205 adapters break, TH400/NP205 adapter is designed better and stronger. TH350/205 use a internally splined coupler (27 spline), Th400/205 use no coupler and bigger splines (32 spline). TH350s have a 4 bolt tailhousing, TH400s have a 6 bolt tail housing. A TH350 is a 1/2 ton trans and a TH400 was used in the military 1 1/4 ton CUCV trucks. TH350, no thanks!

Kind of off topic. Is there anyway to lengthen the stock kickdown cable on my th350 or do i need to purchase a new Lokar cable or somthing similar. Do I even need to run one?
my truck will see mud, trails and few rocks, and It will not be driven on the street. Thread High Jack over.

i ran a 465 with 411 gears on 38" tires. did great BUT the only draw back was at times you can really kill the momentum from gear to gear...that was my only complaint and the clutch slipped a few times..... the granny gear is great, also if you are going to do dirt drags i think it would do fine, but in a long stretch of slop you tend to loose a little momentum....i would go with a good or modified Th400, and start slap shifting. i have pulled my sm465 and put in a TH400, but i have also upgraded my project to different means.
just my opinion........................................... |
