Proper R&P Selection

Hi,

I have a 4cyl '97 TJ with stock std tranie and t-case. I'm swapping in HP44/9 to run 37's on and I'm wondering what gear ratio to run. I mostly play in the mud and I'm wondering if anyone has a similar setup or suggestions? This is my first Jeep 4cyl so I'm kind of lost...

Thanks

I am running a 44 and 9" and 37" boggers in the mud with 5.13s on a TJ But I have a 4.0. I mostly run 2nd and 3rd in low range and 1st-2nd in high depending on what I am doing. With a 4cyl and that set up I think you would be stuck with 1st in low. But I have never had a 4cyl. I have seen guys with 4cyls run similar setups w/ 4to1 in the t-case on the rocks but you are gonna need a lil more wheel speed than that. With you being way up past yankeeville in that thick mud you might wanna think big block

Big block... one thing at a time Already planning that route, hence the 44/9 axle swap. If I can get away with running the 4cyl for 2 years and not pissing myself off then I'll be happy. I'm not a fan of 4 cyl but for the right price... It's any extremely good start.

I always say if it is worth gearing it is worth over gearing. A lot of people choose a gear that will match them with stock rpms at cruising speed. But bigger tires and wheels and more mass to get moving so I usually try to go a few steps above, if not alot. If you are in low and out of gear you are screwed. If you are over geared it seems like you can go up a gear easier than when you run out of them.

If you are worried about street manners then that is a different story, but in my eyes if you are building a truck with bigger than 33's gas mileage should be left behind.

I tend to use this as a reference for my set ups, and chose a gear in the yellow below the orange. But that is just me. Different strokes for different fokes.
