air intake ?'s
On a strictly trail/mud truck where are most folks pulling in air. Im thinking of running a duct to the cab to pull cooler clean air. Under hood seems hot and more prone to dirt even with good baffels. The cab sound good until you run the numbers for the mass of air a 500+ in motor will suck through it at 6K. Is under the hood with a good filter best? RK

I too am looking at options. the most common ive seen is cutting a hole in the hood and runnin a good sized tube to the top of the cab with a big like Kand N filter on the end. and that seems too work well. but you still have the ability of mud hitting the filter.

Run it in the cab, as long as you have good air flow inside the cab its not a problem, all of the guys i mud race with, including myself run it inside the cab.
Keep the shortest length of hose possible, use at least 5" diameter hose/pipe or you loose way to much power (to guys i race with were using the 4" spectre single inlet unit and were losing 70+hp), use steel or aluminum pipe if at all possible, as unless its rubber hose rated for large amounts of vacuum, the hose will collaspe at WOT and fawk ya over, the best rubber stuff to use would be the ones that semi's use, as its all 5" or bigger in diameter and rated for the vaccum these motors will see, i'll post pictures of my setup over the weekend.

I have a bunch of 5-6" Al pipes with bends from a local OTR salvage yard. Had the plan all laid out then thought about the mass of air that a 500 + inch motor will such through it at 6K. You guys run any exta vents in the truck? I planned on pulling the reed valve type vent in the back of the cab. They were made to let air out when the heat/AC is on but not let in a draft when it is off.

I just used 4" sewer pipe on mine and ran it through the firewall where the heater box used to be. 4" Spectra cone filter and cadillac bonnet on a stock 350. Didn't notice any difference in performance due to being stock motor.
Sorry for the crooked pictures. ![]()

Just to let you know, diesels dont have vacuum in the air inlet or the intake manifold so those hoses have no vacuum on them. They may however have boost applied to them but that does not collapse them, if anything it would swell them.

Sorry to say but they have lots of vacuum on the intake side of the turbo. How do you think air gets into the turbo? Think of the mass of air a 1000 cubes sucks in at 1500RPM and 15# of boost. Id agree they dont have much suck at the egine most of the time but between the filter and turbo it would make your pecker bleed.

if its really dusty out i can see the movement of the dust in the cab, but whenever i race i always have the windows open, but there's enough holes in the cab and no seals left in anything to where it's never been an issue, but if this was a dd i'd still use the same setup, except i'd use a filter housing off a big 4wd diseal tractor and run the inlet to the outside. Its actually fairly noisy too, when i nail it to WOT thiss setup on motor actually whistles ever so slightly, kinda neat, dunno if its good or bad but that it does.

The parts i used were nice pieces too, fairly inexpensive and were off good quality material and workmanship. The rubber was very thick and a lot stronger than any of the other hoses offered for these applications.

jenks, the sharp turn in those elbows and smaller diameters would restrict flow and hurt hillbilly numbers
Myron; maybe contact these guys: http://intakehoses.com/Merchant2/mer...gory_Code=4DEG, or get some 6" parts similar to mine, and have a plate made up to raise the base up to where it will meet the 6", or get a very short reducer that matches the carb size (may have to do some cutting)and match it to whatever id hose you use, then bolt it down like a regular air cleaner like what i did.

I use a 1986 caddy air hood and some drier vent hose, works great, cheap!
