Ok I bought a LS2 and what I think is a 4l80. I obviously want to match them up, but was told I have to have the 4l80e. Now after running number with no luck an searching to no avail. Do they look different than the other? Do I have to have the 4l80e to run my LS2? My 4l80 does have a 6 hole stall converter if that helps. Any info???
As far as I know, which is very little about bowtie stuff, the -e simply stands for electronically controlled, and the newer (90's+?) ones they simply dropped the -e because they were all electronic by then.
So, if you have an electronic hookup for transmission control, then yes it is, practically speaking, a 4l80E.
I must have confused you some. There is no such thing as a 4L80, they are all 4L80E's. But there are several variations of the 4L80E. You can shoot me a couple pics of the trans and converter and I can probably tell you if you have the right one. Or give me a call and I might can come look at what you got going on and give some insight on it.
That's kinda what I thought the e meant. As far as changing the stall converter out to a 3 hole, I have a 6 hole. The fly wheel is a 3 hole. I suppose there are multiple hole converters for the 4l80?
Pics make me think its a 96-01, which is not exactly what you need to bolt directly to an LS. Remember what I said about seventh bolt hole on the very top? Yours does not have that. most all the LS trans do. Heres the one surefire way to know.
Lay a straight edge across the fae of the bellhousing. Mesure the distance from the straight edge to one of the converter bolt lug faces. make sure your converter is completely seated in the trans, there will only be around a 1/4 inch gap between the backside of the converter and the front bottom edge of the trans case when its full seated. Tell me what the depth that you measured is and I will compare that to a trans that I have.
It's a pre '96 80e. The cooler ports are both at the front of the case, 96+ have the return at the back.
There were two builds pre '96, the 91-93 with the crap internal harness and bad bulkhead connector and the 94-95 with the updated internal harness (no bolt cutting through the insulation) and bulkhead. From the pictures it looks like a 94-95.
I called the guy I bought the 80e from and he said it came out of a 91 ext cab dually. So I guess I do have the wrong one! Damn! Another 300$ in wrong parts! Anyone have the right one for sale?
Yep, but I beleive you can make that one work. You will have to change the electronics to the new style and run the correct flywheel. Let me find out more and I'll get back at ya. BTW, did you measure the depth on the converter? That would let us know if you have the right converter for sure.
I guess I'm not following you on what exactly I need to put the straight edge on. Here's a pic of the trans turned over. You can see the bolts holes on the converter are well over a 1/4 deeper than the outer shell of the casing. Now the converter is about 1/4 from touching the area close to the pan.
Definetly will not bolt to an LS without the right parts. Go to Smith or Rhodes and order 12621399. That will take care of mounting the engine to the trans.
Now, how ecatly are you planning on wiring this trans so it will shift?
Im new to this electronic shift stuff. So I really have no idea. I was planning on sending my wiring harness to a guy up in Bella Vista to redo my harness and flash my computer for me. I just figured he would know what I needed to get to run the trans. Now as for that part to connect the LS to my Trans, if this is gonna be a major undertaking and rewiring and $$$, Ill just look for the right year model transmission and buy another one and sell this one. Whats your opinion?
I mean I honestly have no idea what to do now. That part is a flywheel that will connect them. But as far as rewiring the 80, thats outta my league. Any suggestions?
So long as you have the updated internal harness for the 94+ trannies it will communicate with a 411 ecm provided the harness is worked so the right pinouts end up i nthe right ecm pins. The ecm also needs the 4l80e .bin file, as I understand it, to then operate the transmission. Being an LS2, I don't believe the ecm will have this (likely the 65e/70e or manual).
If you need a harness, Pacific Fabrication on here supplies very clean custom built harnesses reasonably. Mines on the way, but the others I've seen are very nice and plug and play.
I'm putting a '96 80e behind my LQ9 and I'll be using a BU54 factory converter (LQ4/4.8L stocker), and a LQ4 flex plate with the spacer kit all bolted on. Should work alright.
That LS2 I don't think would be happy with the fairly tight stall of the factory LQ4 (higher itself than the BU52 behind the 8.1L) so you may need to spend some time finding a good aftermarket stall for that combination.
I was told that the guts of a 4L80e two wheel drive are the same as the 4L80e four wheel drive? If this is true can the parts be interchanged from one tranny to the other and if so what will be the difference? I don't know anything about transmissions so this is what I am dealing with my 1997 Chevy 4X4. Need a transmission but hard to find one that will fit. Thanks for any input.
