I’ve done some research on crossover steering for my 87 gmc half ton. It seems that D44’s have the flat top knuckle on the passenger side for the crossover steering. I have 10 bolt front and do not have the flat top. Is there any way I could get the flat top knuckle without doing a whole front end swap? Could I just pick up a knuckle at the local wrecker and put it on in place if my 10 bolt passenger’s side knuckle? I’ve read here that crossover is probably one of the first and most effective mods to do to your rig and I want to get this under way.
Pretty sure you can put D44 knuckles on the 10bolt front-end.
But note that not all D44's are "flat tops". Some year Chevys and Jeeps do have flat tops. Look here for good info on flat top knuckles: http://77cj.littlekeylime.com/flatop_knucles.html
Yes, you can put a d44 knuckle on your 10 bolt, and then everything from the knuckle out will interchange. But the flat tops only came on a couple of years, not all d44's. Jump on the Forsale section and search for flat tops, alot of times you can find them already milled and drilled.
The knuckles you're looking for are from '76 and older Chevy Dana 44's with disc brakes, you'll need both as the orientation of the tie rod is different between 10 bolt and D44 knuckles. The passenger side knuckle will need to be machined flat and then drilled and tapped, they are a direct swap.
You can also replace your passenger side knuckle with one of these and be done.
