Looking into purchasing a m1009 blazer (for as little as possible). Was wondering if any one knows a place in Louisiana that has some for sale? I have been checking on govnt liq and saw plenty but I am leary as I have read some bad reviews on the company. Any ideas, suggestions, leads, experiences? I am a standstill on this and really need some 411. Any help is appreciated, Thanks.
You really want the truck version for the lower gears, rear locker, one ton axles, and stronger frame. And up here in rust prone VT, a cheap one goes for about $1800 at the last auction I saw.
Buying from Government Liquidation IS buying from the US Government. They are the private contractor hired to sell off anything the Government doesn't want. Now with that said, you can still find a lot of stuff on GSA, but it's usually stuff that was reserved by a local Government and used and turned back in. They can still be good trucks but you have to know what you are looking at since many may have been sitting on the back lot of some municipality or fire dept. for a long time. You can run into similar issues with truck on GL, not to mention bent driveshafts form them being loaded and unloaded with forklifts.
In my opinion, you are usually better off buying from a private party. You may pay a little more, but normally the owner has already done all the legwork and fixed the most common issues and put it on the road. Do some research as former military vehicles are not something to just jump into buying.
check out Steelsoldiers they should be able to help you find a dealer near you in LA. I bought my M1008 from GL had ZERO issues you basically need to have all the correct paper work and when they ask for it give it to them. Then you have to wait for the back ground check and then your done and get your truck. yeah get a M1008. A M1009 is just a k5 blazer with a 6.2 and a th400.
+1 for Government Liquidation. Picked up 4 14bolt FF's new in the crate a couple years ago for around 1k shipped. If you know what you are looking for and understand the condition you are going to get it in you can't beat it. I'm in the military and just understand that anything you buy is lowest bidder built/semi-trained operators. With military equipment it's pretty much what you see is what you get. If it looks new it is. Nothing looks new once we get our hands on it. If it looks worn out, it has more problems than what you want to deal with.
also try good ol craigslist. i found my first m1009 on craigslist about 30 miles from my house for 800 bucks. in rust free beat up shape which is what i wanted. then later found a m1009 after posting a wanted ad on this site
hell i'm in the market for a diesel blazer M1009. I moved from Mariposa County to somewhere here in the bay where i'm now suddenly smoggable again. Not good! My beloved Jimmy is destined for scrapyard unless I find one I can afford and move all my stuff over to it Ill take pm's about barn/yard sightings. I'm on craigslist daily! Gov Liq had a 2500 minimum last i looked for those but I can't afford that much. I'm in the market for a VIN basically.
can you relocate your registration to a county where they dont have emissions. i live in illinois and i used to just plate my cars at my buddys house in indiana cause they didnt have emissions. then when they started doing emissions i plated it back home cause they changed their laws where 95 and older dont have emissions. i too have lost a blazer to the evil emissions gods
