17" tires tend to have higher "D" or "E" load ratings, which makes for stiffer sidewalls that don't conform to the terrain as well when aired down.
As said though, 17s are fast becoming the new 15s, particularly for 37" sizes and above, which it's obvious the tire industry has found to be the most profitable.
Getting new steel 17x9s for $311/set, delivered, ain't a bad deal. If money's tight and it's off-highway, you can get retread 265/70R17C mud tires for $120 each, plus shipping. Go bigger once your wallet recovers.
for tires larger than 37 in the rock crawling arena, 15" rims/tires have too much sidewall flex and deems an unstable ride.
