Well, we all know cinder blocks are not a safe option. That being said, what is the safest way to jack and support a lifted truck when removing the rear axle?
For example: My truck is a 1991 suburban with 6" lift sitting on 37's. If i needed to remove the rear axle, what is the best way to support the body in order to remove the axle?
as far as i am concerned TALL truck jackstands under the frame rails is the ONLY way to safely hold a vehicle up. I know they are expensive but worth the money.
Yup, there are some threads for ideas in the tool section on building your own for less.
Another option that I would and have trusted, large good quality lumber. My neighbor has several 6x8s, he used to drive his low cars up on the for added height, but I would trust a length to add some height to the stands as needed, you just want to make sure that you don't have your stands all on seperate pieces, or at least positioned so that they can't slide.
I use 4x4 cribbing, but same thing. You can usually pick up the scraps for free if you know a local contractor who does decks. Tall jackstands would be the way to go if you intend to do this sort of work often and a lift is not in the budget.
I use a cherry picker (engine hoist). Its rated at 4 tons and has been reinforced on the arms and legs.
When the ram is extended, I had a couple lengths of channel iron, I put them on the ram and drilled a pair of holes to hold them on. They fit between the top pf the ram body and the bottom of the arm.
Might not be engineered, but its not coming off and unless the arm breaks, it aint falling.
Ah, I read it as making little plywood cubes and putting jack stands on top of that. Solid wood would work as well as cribbing but I don't think I would trust a box, lol.
I need about 4 more inches to take my rear axle out with the tall jack stands. So I Have a bunch or 2x8 I stack so I can slide the axle under the truck.
I always liked the idea of building a small frame, so to speak, that the stand would sit inside of so, although unlikely, it would not slide off your base. Think of the bases for high lift jacks, how they have a recess the base of the jack sits in so it will not slide off.
rigid brand pipe stands, pipe fitters use them and they work awesome for holding up a rig, plus they are extremely adjustable
