So, I posted hello in the newbie greetings section... and now i'm making my first real newbie post. Go me.
I recently purchased a 2000 WJ for 1000 bucks from a buddy. Apparently he jumped it once and it broke the front axle but it was still "maneuverable" and i went crawling in it a bit before i decided that the WJ platform isn't what i was really lookin for to wheel. SO, i recently sold my WJ for 1000 bucks to a friend that has the time, patience, and money to build it how it should be built. As it where, i am currently in the market for a new rig. I'm thinking about an old Tacoma or some kind of jeep? i don't really know what to get. I want to be able to trail and climb moderate rock, something that can be modified semi easily, that won't cost me around 21,000 to make "perfect". What would ya'll recommend?
I've been looking at an old style K5 blazer or a 89 toyota tacoma... either seems like a really good starter rig for me.... being a beginner sucks, but everybody started somewhere. Know what I mean?
If not mine Ur best bet would be to look through the for sale section and save urself an ton of money. There r some unbelievable deals right now. Good luck. Mine was a K5 3 stages of builds and $30,000 later and its what u see in the add. It was built as a half ton first the a 1 ton lots of body armor and then removed the body.
Ford Rangers are great capable rigs that can be had pretty cheap and don't cost a lot to modify. Or if you want an SUV version there's the Bronco II or Explorer. There is some variability in durability of their parts through the years, though pretty much anything & everything can easily be swapped around to make any one of them into an awesome rig (early-mid '90s was their strongest period).
Get something that can be found cheap, with solid axles already under it. XJs, WJ/ZJs, older k5 blazers, any of the old wranglers if you can find them for a good price (around here people think their 20 year old wranglers are made of fucking gold and price them accordingly). Older 'yotas ('85 is the magic year I believe, '97 if you find a landcruiser for a good price, after that its IFS in the front).
You can get away with an IFS truck, but eventually you're gonna want a solid axle under it, and its easier just to start that way.
I've got a 1990 k5 and love it. I did have to swap out the Half tons for a set of one tons but other than that I love the thing. Great heater and ac, power windows and locks. And the throttle body injection is nice too.If I was running a smaller tire like a 35 or so I think the 10 bolts wouldve been fine but I wanted to run 39.5 boggers so we all know how that would of went....... BANG!
Yeah i hear you there man, I've been looking around on craigslist... there are a SHIT ton for sale... i just don't know what year to look at... they are a pretty sweet ride though !
So, it looks like i AM getting this 77 K5, i think i'll like it. Does anybody know where i could get a passenger door glass...and a front windshield... God damn ******** and their shotguns on nice rigs... Does anybody know if fast glass will do 77's still? or do i need to find some old broken down rigs glass? Not really sure. And also who would be the best all around vendors for accessories for the K5?
I ended up not getting it, it was really messed up and I didn't like the way it felt. I don't think im really interested in the k5's. I sat in a cj7 and it fit my frame pretty well (large framed dude). Im not really sure what I want still...I used to own a s10 4x4...maybe ill look into one of those to build up, swap out the ifs for solid 1/2 ton and a better rear. Any ideas? Nevada area? Could travel to northern cali, utah, arizona... im lookin for ideas as platforms to build up. I guess ill keep frying the forum for ideas. Any input would be well appreciated.
That ram charger looks freaking amazing! Thank you James for your input! i really appreciate the time you took to find those ideas for me! I will get a hold of that guy to try and check it out! I'll let ya'll know how it goes!
took me like 2 minutes....there's a ton of stuff out there. just look around. for my last build i knew i wanted a v8, solid axles and a removable top. I ended up with a scout
