Semi ignorant late model ford dana 60 mod question... Minor ranting.
So, at this point is it finally cheaper to put new tubes to a new ford axle and live with the unit bearing and/or swap to an 8x6.5" knuckle setup and buy custom axle shafts? Is there a reason the tubes couldn't be made the right length for a stock 77-79 HP ford axleshaft? How feasible is this actually? I understand pressing the tubes in is not something you do with a hammer, but it's gotta be easier and cheaper at this point to have it done by a shop that straightens or fixes axle housings than hunting down an axle that was made for 2 years 40 years ago. I probably should have just called one of the reputable local axle repair places and seen what they would charge to "make" me basically a late model HP dana 60 out of what would be a 36" spring pad width axle, but coming on here and getting bitched at for being an idiot is so much more rewarding.
Near where I live asking for these things gets you laughed at in any junkyard in a 100 mile radius, but all of this late model shit with a 36" spring pad width is frustratingly cheap. Yes, I'm keeping my 32.5" leaf springs and not linking the front of my truck. And I work where I don't have time to constantly deal with convoluted craigslist deals or 16 hour drives for affordable axles. Oh, and Dana Spicer, if you're listening, where are the fucking crate axles already? And can we get a HP 77-79 ford 60 added to the list of axles that you'll never make again? At least that way it'll really get everyone's hopes up... It's not like there's any kind of market for Dana 60s... Or that your bankrupt ass company could use a few bucks and americans a few jobs... ![]() http://www.crateaxle.com/ Last edited by rickjames; 07-28-2012 at 09:58 PM. |

They're local to me in orange county, but I was thinking someone more local down here in the valley who would be willing to just swap the tubes. I've checked out a few of the custom front builds, but haven't read through them too seriously cause most of it seems to be just downright out of my price range or capability as far as what i can actually do myself. I'll probably get a few quotes next week, I do have someone local in mind who I'd like to question about this.
