Gonna sell the CJ and buy an XJ for the room, what are opinions on the available over the counter lift kits. I'm leaning towards the RE 5.5" kit, want to run 33s, lock both ends, drive it till the 35 breaks, then try to find an XJ 44 or an 8.8.

I like REs stuff - little more $$, but usually pretty good quality and good customer service, in my experience. The 5.5" kit with 33s should work real well for you, 'specially with the lockers. It's fun to see where the extra wheelbase works better (and worse) than the SWBs.

we did the RE 5.5 extreme duty kit and it works awesome. With open diffs and that lift, on 33's, far outperforms any truck i've ever driven with open diffs.

Street manners are lacking though, we removed the rear sway bar and put discos on the front. Thing sways like a boat in the ass end without the swaybar.

Get some springs from rusty's off road and make your own over the weekend from the existing arms, cut some fenders and put 36's under it

I ran Rusty's 6" XJ Cherokee STS Rear Springs, no rear swaybar and didn't notice ANY on road difference than stock. It netted me 7.5 inches of lift in the rear. Disco the front and it was a scary ride though!

Those lower arms are scary.

Even if you boxed the lowers I would still be worried about them. Why not buy some tube and do it the right way?

I beat the hell outa R.E. stuff fer years and other than bending a lower c-arm the stuff held up really well.Do they make a long arm set-up now? If they do I'd go with it.

Rumor has it that they're about to release an XJ long-arm kit. Around 6" IIRC.

currie is about to release a new kit for the XJ (saw it in a mag recently) but I don't know what size, etc.

Personally, for me I'm all about quality over price. I don't want to pay like 400 dollars for a kit that is possibly inferior. I'm that way with anything I buy. I'd rather spend a little extra for that piece of mind.

I was going to lift my wife's XJ (but she's adamantly opposed at the moment) and was going to go with the RE 3.5 Super-flex with new rear leafs, as compared to the AAL. That's the main problem with the smaller lifts, they are all AAL, and I personally don't like that thought... but that's me...

Those arms are temporary for now but they seem to hold up pretty well. I was just home over christmas from college and had some lift springs sitting around and decided to make some really cheap lowers. I just decided to use the old ones because they already had the rubber mounts and the U shaped frame of the original lowers twist alittle but is almost impossible to bend with out heat. As for on the road yeah its not the safest thing but it works for now and actually rides great compaired to my old 3inch lift. Don't worry its gonna all be redone this summer along with hopefully a dana 44 up front and 14 bolt in the rear. Those arms do make the front flex like mad though.
