Engine? Transmission? Frogs? What?
For the engines either use the casting #, or if the head is off you can look to see if there are steam holes drilled around the cylinder. If there are, this indicates a 400. This is also a good reference : http://www.nastyz28.com/sbcmenu.html

I could be wrong but I thought the balancer and fly wheel are diffrent on a 400 because of the exteranal balanceing
